Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerAugust 26, 2020 at 11:54 am #2291826I had to restore from this morning’s backup to test this as I had deleted the troublesome account. Changing my password did not work — I still couldn’t use search. I have restored again so I’m not going to test any other suggestions as it has taken me hours! But thanks for the idea.

ManagerAugust 26, 2020 at 10:00 am #2291803More from KristoferA:
The background story is: certain things can mess up the local keystore which breaks some things in Windows cryptoapi, including initiating some built-in CSPs. A user initiated password change will fix those things again.
That problem has been around for many years, but it seems like something in recent Windows 10 updates will do something that triggers it.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 26, 2020 at 11:17 am #2291814I see this as just another random Windows 10 bug. Sure, each bug has a reason why it happened. But, the fact that each one affects only a small number of people is unsettling. My computer repair shop has different people that come in just about every week that have issues that started after a Windows update. This level of random “degradation” is annoying. But, it does help pay the bills. Thanks, Microsoft for a job shoddily done!
By the way, Windows 10 is still the best OS for most people to use these days, since it still runs the old Windows programs that people want to just keep using. I just wish Microsoft cared more about quality and hired back the 10,000 QA engineers the let go five, or so, years back.

AskWoody PlusAugust 26, 2020 at 1:11 pm #2291849running Win 10 1909 with July updates.
I first noticed this problem with File Explorer search yesterday.
Today I determined that File Explorer search doesn’t work if I start with Pictures library and then go to subfolder under Pictures on D drive but if I start at D drive under This PC and then go to same subfolder it works.
I haven’t noticed other side effects. I did not reset my password. No idea what might have caused the problem which isn’t even consistent based on where I start in File Explorer.

[See the full post at: Problem reported with Win10 version 2004 upgrade: Search doesn’t work]I just updated a VM copy of Windows 10 Home to 2004 and all seems fine. Search and Windows key work as normal.

No, it does not.
My companion’s Windows 7 was forced upgraded to Windows 10 ~5 years ago.
When she got to check her laptop in the morning I heard cries.
None of her very important business software worked and some were deleted during the update.
These were specialized software.I immediately restored her laptop to previous version and blocked all updates for Windows 7.
~5 years now and not a single problem, crash, freeze…..-

AskWoody LoungerAugust 27, 2020 at 6:40 am #2291966These are very frustrating issues. I do not use windows anymore apart our company, cause I simple do not agree with this circus going on recently. The sadest thing is, when you convince your notebook to function properly and half year later.. another issue appears.
It does not surprise me that there are promblems with searching, since cortana died unexpectedly, although Microsoft promised, that cortana is the future of personal computing.
Also problems with indexing happens a lot.

AskWoody PlusAugust 27, 2020 at 3:03 pm #2292061I see this problem on Windows 10 Enterprise 1909 in both administrator and standard accounts. It varies by both machine and user. These are all Active Directory joined PCs and almost all logins are done via Smart Cards.
I do not have this problem on my home PC running Windows 10 Pro 1909. At home, I use a PIN to log in. Both the home and work PCs are updated through the 2020-08 cumulative patches.
