• Problem with CNet.com Videos

I’ve come across a weird problem with videos on CNet.com.
On my laptop Win 7 64 bit, IE, FF4, Chrome I have no problem.
On my desktop Win 7 64 bit, IE, FF4, Chrome I can not get CNet.com videos to load the flash circle just keeps rotating. However, YouTube works just fine, even what I assume is a flash ad on the CNet videos page works!

Flash Version 10.3.181.23
Plugin Version 10.3.181.14

Steps taken so far:
1. Uninstall Flash via Revo & reinstall
2. Check Flash settings against laptop – all the same.
3. Addes cnettv.cnet.com to trusted locatioins in Flash settings.

Any Ideas are welcome.

Hi RG,
Try refreshing the page or flush the DNS cache.

Hi RG,
Try refreshing the page or flush the DNS cache.

RR,

Thanks for the Idea but no love…
BTW: I forgot to mention in my OP that I had flushed the temporary internet files. Also I’m using OpenDNS at my LinkSys router.

RG,
Has Java been installed ? I also always install directX after installing OS.

If it fails to install, I start again.

RR,

Am I missing something? The DirectX Web Installer says it is for versions 9c and earlier and I am running DirectX 11.

Java 6 Update 22 is installed.

RG,
All windows OS’s get only part of the DirectX file for the system in question. If you go to the MS page I showed, D/L it and it will update automatically, unless there is a problem with your PC.
If it fails to install when I do it, I re install (clean method)

• #1282254

RR,

Updated the DirectX per your instructions. Still no love!

This is getting frustrating as my laptop works just fine and it is just the CNet site. Argh!!!

The latest flash version for FF4 is 10.3.181.22. You list 10.3.181.23 which is the latest version for IE9. You need separate flash versions for IE and FF. You can get it here: http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

• #1282274

RG,
I suggest going to Filehippo & download the portable ‘Update Checker’.
Try with FF in safe mode. Right click IE9 & run as admin.

Update,

Tried all suggestions…No Love! Tried uninstalling Flash, Shockwave, etc on both Desktop and laptop via Revo. Ran CCLeaner, Reinstalled using new downloads. Still No Love. Laptop works Desktop doesn’t! Killed and reloaded HOSTS file…you guessed it!

Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi RG,
Could it be as obvious as the obvious, which has obviously been missed. Were you signed in ????

RG,
Try copying the url to notepad on laptop. transfer to desktop.

RR,

I’m getting to the cnettv.com page via a link on the main cnet.com site, same link on both machines.
I can get to the page it just won’t load the videos. These videos will load on 3 yes 3 other machines {2 Win 7 one XP/Ubuntu Linux} on the same network {so I know it isn’t the router or modem}.

Does anyone know of a place where a page/site can be blocked other than HOSTS that resides on the local machine?

Hi RG – Chrome also has its own version of Flash. My Chrome version 12.0.742.100 and my Flash version within Chrome is 10,3,181,26

Are software firewall settings consistent among computers?

Are router firewall settings consistent among computers?

• #1283908

tfspry,

Chrome 12.0.742.91 has the same problem, I have all 3 browsers installed. All computers are running MSE and MS Firewall w/o any rules added. Ditto for the Linksys router.

Thanks for the reply.

Could also try adding cnettv.com to Trusted Sites.

Instead of adding “trusted locatioins in Flash settings”
Could try adding Trusted Sites for FF and IE as shown here……

…..
Also I’m using OpenDNS at my LinkSys router.

Have you tried without OpenDNS?

PS: Is a recent image backup available for that system?

It’s a bad idea to add random sites to the software installation permission for Firefox. I recommend NOT adding sites there.

• #1284270

Have you tried without OpenDNS?

I can’t see how that can be the problem since it is at the router and the 3 other machines connected through the same router work just fine. I am not using the OpenDNS software just their servers.

RG, have you considered trying the 64 bit flash preview with a 64 bit browser version? I know it doesn’t address the main issue, but sometimes going around it may get you a solution.
Another thing to try, not to be a definitive solution, but just to see if you can get any video from Cnet on that computer, if you have XP mode, have you checked if you can get the videos in a browser running on the virtual machine?

• #1284357

ruirib,

Flash works fine on all other sites just not CNET! Can’t get a thing on CNET although I do get what appears to be a flash ad on the main CNET page, that would work!

I’ll give the 64 bit flash a try. I only have HP so no XP mode.

Thanks.

I have a similar problem loading ripoffreport.com here is my post: I am going to try cnet videos to see what happens. maybe RG can try ripoffreport.com to see if that loads.

3 Browsers cannot load a website
Subject: browser problem
Interesting problem: New Win 7 64bit Home build PC cannot connect to a particular web site (ripoffreport.com) –it just times out. On this computer all 3 major browsers (IE 8, FF 4 and Chrome) will not connect to this site. Otherwise all 3 browsers appear to work fine. Other PC’s and Macs on the same network connect to ripoffreport.com without problem using any of the browsers.

I have turned off firewall and antivirus, changed DNS settings, tried dynamic and fixed IP’s, updated Flash and Java, updated windows, Entering through search engines, deleting cookies, checked the hosts file and other stuff.

Any ideas?
RR,

Thanks for your efforts. I’ve come to the conclusion that my only remaining options are:
1. Restore an old image.
2. Completely reinstall.

I’ll keep you posted.

Hi RG, best of luck my friend.

• #1285864

I thought by now the problem would have worked itself out?
I click on links from CNET e-mails like I have done for years now, the web page loads, and in the video window all I see is Loading.
And that spinning arrow can turn forever. Eventually I give up and close the browser. I thought maybe CNET servers are congested.
I even updated to Firefox 5 today and same thing, so I searched the topic and ended up here.
I installed a different video card a few days ago, you think that could be it?
But I know I had this problem since way before that change, I personally blame one of the numerous automatically loaded windows updates every week.
Security is great, but I believe if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I am really getting tired of having to troubleshoot something that was automatically updated and broke my system which was always perfect.
I know it isn’t any virus or something like that, cause I am careful, never open unknown files and scan constantly, it has to be an update!
Oh well, I had to vent and hopefully somebody working in CNET will figure out there are thousands of others just like me out here, clicking and closing our browsers, never seeing any videos.
Thanks all for listening,
AnthonyNYC
