• Problem with Thunderbird email program

Thursday (2/9/16) I checked my email as I’ve done a million times. Before I exited the program, it updated to version 45.7.1 and ever since then it can’t check for (or send) email, giving this message:

‘Could not connect to mail server username@comcast.net; the connection was refused.’

I haven’t changed any account settings in years. A Google search for the string above was not helpful. Neither was rebooting (always my first action when I have any kind of problem).

If it wasn’t the update, then it’s one heck of a coincidence, and if it was the update, I expected that it would have been reported to Mozilla by someone before now.

I am not a computer novice, but this has me completely baffled.

    OS: Windows 10

    Any ideas?

PS: I have access to my email online, it’s just a pain because I have several accounts and have to log into each one separately, whereas Thunderbird checks them all at once.

You appear to have a username entered in settings for that account where Thunderbird expects a server name.

Configure Mozilla Thunderbird 16.0 and Up for Comcast Email

Do you have a recent backup of your Thunderbird:
      c:users[acct]AppDataLocalThunderbird
      …………………………….RoamingThunderbird

Apparently the setting change must have been made by something recently?

Thank you BruceR and RolandJS for your suggestions.

I finally found the problem by checking my firewall settings. Thunderbird was on the list of programs allowed to access the internet, but when I checked closer that permission was granted to version 45.1.

Once I manually added version 45.7.1 to the firewall, everything was back to normal.
