For the past few weeks, every time I boot my computer, it prompts me to run chk/dsk on my F: drive. The first few boots I did, but the prompt never stopped coming up. Lately I’ve just skipped it & gone on. This wouldn’t bother me so much except that I can’t defrag that drive, as it tells me I need to run chk/dsk. All three drives show “Healthy” in “Administrative Tools”. Other than that, the thing runs great. Anyone have any guesses?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerMay 16, 2011 at 11:22 am #1279622Did you just run chkdsk? Or chkdsk /f ? Chkdsk by itself just reports errors. Chkdsk with the /f switch repairs the corruption.
This is something that just popped up, on it’s own. It kinda reminds me of Windows98. The screen comes up & if I go ahead & let it run, the results aren’t up long enough to read.

AskWoody LoungerMay 16, 2011 at 11:25 am #1279623Try running a more thorough checkdisk by using the “r” switch, and do it from the dos command line of a http://www.bootdisk.com/“]boot disk [/url].
Sorry, you’re talking way over my head. I can put a computer together & install an operating system, beyond that I’m pretty illiterate.

AskWoody LoungerMay 16, 2011 at 2:52 pm #1279650Hi bushwack,
If you own an XP installation disk, you can boot to it and watch for the option to run the Recovery Console. Within the Recovery Console, you can run the checkdisk ‘r’ switch Clint referred to by typing ‘chkdsk /r’ without the quote marks, but note the space in front of the ‘/’ mark.
The /r option will take longer to run, but is more thorough than the /f option. If you do not have an XP installation disk, Bleeping Computer has a suggested download to create a Recovery Console CD.

AskWoody LoungerMay 19, 2011 at 8:52 am #1280003Start – Run – CMD – chkdsk /? (will show all options)
Decide on appropriate option(s) (e.g. /f, /r, etc.)Type, depending on option(s) decided, chkdsk (drive letter): /(option1) /(option2) – without parentheses! example: chkdsk c: /f /r
Message will appear if drive is in use, asking whether you want to perform the task at next boot. Answer yes, type exit (to exit command mode) and reboot. chkdsk will run on the specified partition with the options which you have specified.

There are also a couple of links on that page if that page doesn’t help you.
