• Problems with Outlook Connector

I am tearing my hair out almost….

I have added Outlook Connector to Outlook 2003 yesterday. I linked two Windows Live accounts and left them syncing overnight. No error messages, but all messages / folders are not fully up to date, expexcially inbox which should be immediate / current. It should be downloading full emails and syncing every 10 minutes. Why so slow? How long can initial sync take? Is there a size limit, for example if a Windows Live account is bigger than 2GB will it be able to sync normally with Outlook 2003 or not?

For backgound / context, I previously used Outlook 2010 with connector without problems but decided to revert to Outlook 2003 because 2010 is terrible with IMAP and one of my business email accounts is IMAP. With Outlook 2003, IMAP is fairly instantaneous whereas 2010 it can be a nightmare – it’s a known problem with no solutions that I can find.

Any help on 2003 / connector appreciated.

By the way, 2010 and connector were removed, registry cleaned, 2003 installed, updates downloaded and connector added.

Alternatively, if anyone has any solution for the Outlook 2010 slow IMAP problem also appreciated. The IMAP mail box is actually an Office 365 account but I chose not to use the Exchange connection – although that is instantaneous compared to IMAP, unfortunately all calendars and contacts etc default away from my current default account to that Exchange account. Even when manually reverting to the account default, the calendar does not switch back and stays with Exchange, which is not my default calendar. Arghhh!

    Thanks!

P.S. I have considered using WLM which is excellently rapid with ALL my accounts. Unfortunately I need colour coded appointments in my calendar, and also require task management which WLM does not offer. Also difficult to get the favourite folders displaying in the quick view that I really want to see in my myriad of folders…otherwise I would be a happy WLM user now.

I do use connector with Windows Live, but my account is small and barely used. There was a time where it was used more, but never with 2GB of messages. I do find connector a very bad piece of software, the synch errors are all too frequent. I use Outlook 2010 and have had no issues.

You can set the default data file to use the calendar and contacts you want. I explained it here: http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread//144016-Want-to-change-default-calendar-in-Outlook

I am using the Outlook connector in Outlook 2007 with 2 (@live, and @msn ) accounts and have had no problems what so ever.

If you take a serious look, I can almost bet you will have gazillions of synch errors :).

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I did another re-install of both Office 2003 and Connector, also for the first download / sync I switched off MS Security Essentials, and that sped things up and seemed to unlock the sync.

If anyone has any suggestions as to which folder / process to have MS SE ignore in relation to this, I would appreciate it. I cannot find a dedicated folder to be able to ignore for Outlook Connector, but maybe I am just looking in the wrong place.

Are you sure it’s MSE causing it? What OS are you using?

You can use Resource Monitor (Disk tab) to check if MSE interferes with the connector). Just type resource monitor in the search box above the “start” button, execute it and check the disk tab while connector is running. It should be easy to find it MSE is interfering.

I have come to the conclusion that it may not be MSE causing it, but I’d prefer to omit the location of Connector from MSE, but I can’t find that location, does anyone know it?

Leaving Outlook 2003 and Connector running overnight solved the problem. However, with Outlook 2010 it was all synced within a few minutes.

Conversely, IMAP with Outlook 2010 is a significantly very slow, whereas with Outlook 2003 it is almost immediate response!

Personally I have rolled back to Outlook 2003 for a quicker IMAP response, Connector seems to be updating correctly now, and furthermore, the 2003 interface, use of screen real estate, use of menus and icons is making me FAR more productive with Office 2010 than I ever was during the past 2 years with Office 2010. I have even timed the difference, Office 2010 is a big waste of time for productive employees! New does not necessarily mean better, new seems to just mean different….or some things fixed but other things broken!!!

The mod can close this now. Thanks.
