Program runs on with USB2 connection but not with USB3 connection

Background: XP Pro running as VM in VMWare Player on an external SSD; Win 7 Ult. 64-bit host.

Odd Occurrence: When SSD is connected via onboard USB 3 port, Nerovision 12 in the VM will not start. Instead an error message states that an Unknown error occurred and Nerovision 12 must close immediately. If however, I connect the SSD via USB 2.0 port, Nerovision 12 starts up and operates normally. Everything else seems to work normally regardless of connection, so it seems some odd quirk of Nerovision, but, what could it be?

No, I deleted the VM a couple times and copied in a replacement but I’ll swap it over again and see what shows up when I get back to it.

Does the USB 3 port work normally with another device like a thumb drive? or camera?

One portable USB 3 and one desktop USB 3 drive are the only devices attached otherwise and they seem to work normally, though something did happen to the network connection one time while copying the VM from another computer and the problem seemed to be either with the drive or the USB 3 connection because no other activity with the drive was possible before a reboot set things straight again.

If you still have access to the VM ware delete it, run CCleaner, restart, download it again.
I know this is a lot of trouble but you may have aglich in the SW which got in when downloaded.

My experience with USB3.0:
System tested: Win7+desktop PC with USB2.0-only+USB3.0 hub (cable with USB3.0 on one end, USB2.0 on other, to a USB2.0 port of the desktop PC).
1. Result: USB2.0,3.0 devices all work, except a USB3.0 hard drive enclosure.
2. Specific result on a USB3.0 enclosure with NTFS-formatted 3.5″ SATA hard drive, with data on it. It’s connected to the hub, USB3.0 to USB3.0. The error message, to that effect: “The drive is raw. Format?” Scary.
Took out the drive. Tried the bare drive with a SATA-to-USB2.0 adapter. No problem.
3. Interesting result on the 2TB “USB3.0” WD Mybook Essential (with USB3.0 port and included USB3.0-to-USB2.0 cable):
No problem if I use its included USB3.0-to-USB2.0 cable. If I use a USB3.0-to-USB3.0 cable to the USB3.0 hub, I have the same error message: “Raw drive. Format?” (It is already NTFS with data in it.) With a different (not the included one) USB3.0-to-USB2.0 cable, no problem.

Mod: Add a PCIe USB3.0. Try all USB devices to it.
Result: *All* USB3.0/2.0 devices work (including USB3.0 hard drive and USB3.0 hard drive enclosures).

Result from Googling the problem: Seems there is timing/speed/clock speed problem. USB3.0 is too fast for USB2.0, aka downward compatibility issue.
The USB3.0 controller chip, expecting the fast speed, is mishandling the downward compatibility, the much slower speed of USB2.0. This may also be true if the downstream is USB2.0 from a USB3.0 hub.

I’m also seeking a solution to this. (A USB2.0-only laptop/netbook may not be able to upgrade to USB3.0 hardware.)
I am thinking of seeking USB3.0 hub with NEC chip. Maybe NEC controller chip has no such problem. (NEC is the de facto chip for USB.)

Mine is an early onboard USB 3 (ASRock Extreme3 970). So I uninstalled the latest version of VMWare and installed an earlier one (5). No change. Uninstalled and reinstalled the USB 3 drivers. No change. Checked the application system event viewer logs…nuthing.
Just for giggles I just logged into the VM via remote desktop and started NV12. Splash screen came up, then blinked out then back on again (me thinking it just froze again), but then after several more seconds, it blinked out and the start screen came up, at least this time it did.
So…hardware maybe, but what could that be considering all the major hardware components are already emulated and the fact that it starts fine locally from a USB 2 port? I dunno, too tired to think more on it; I’ll just leave it running now forever!

USB 3 requires short cables and, in my experience, will not work with EXTENDER cables at all…..just look at the length of the supplied usb 3.0 cable provided with your device….2 1/2′ – 3′!
