Proposal for Nesting and Replies

Is it possible for users to reply to a post and within that reply is an autoquote of the originators post in order to sort out the annoying nesting where no-one knows who’s replying to what that creates confusion. I realize the nesting is 3 deep but, once this buffer is hit, then all sorts of misconstrued replies are everywhere some with some having no relation to the intended poster.

Proposal: once the nesting hits 3 deep, autoquotes are created to inform readers who the reply is intended for. At this third  stage of nesting, all replies get autoquotes once the poster click [Reply]

Is this possible or something similar?

I find things quite difficult to follow once the nesting hits the third stage on limited margins.

Replies

That would need a special coding as there is no setting native to the bbpress to do that.  I can see if I can increase the nesting to say 5 but still limit the indentions if that would help.

It may but, I doubt it as the same would happen again on busy threads with increased nesting and even tighter margins when the buffer is reached elongating posts.

What if the coding is kept simple?  Clicking the REPLY button on a post references that post number and pre-fills the reply box with “Reply to #1234567:”

That would add some continuity long threads.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

Any coding means that I have to hire someone that understands this beast.  Any additional coding adds concerns of testing.  There is no simple coding.

The change of nesting down to three levels just didn’t work for practical purposes.

And I think auto-quoting a full, long post would lead to major frustrations for a proportion of users (especially those on mobile devices/tablets, while we don’t have any page navigation features). But I do agree wholeheartedly with Microfix’s frustration at the almost nonsense being made of replies.

I’ve changed the nesting to 5.  Let’s see what that does.  I’ll also add in a FAQ a request to quote as needed should a thread get busy.
