AskWoody LoungerNovember 2, 2020 at 12:17 pm #2308994Upgrading to Win10 will give you a fresh start with all your software, and it will also get your PC out of its current security danger zone — running an OS that’s well past its clearly stated “end of service.”
The sewing circle of nags warning of the dire consequences of staying with Win7 has recently grown to include Susan Bradley… and now even ‘ol Fred!
Mind you, I have great respect for both, and I am old enough to remember a sentiment now largely lost: it is possible to disagree without being disagreeable. I do have a penchant for putting some English on the ball now and then, like “sewing circle”, but it’s always in good fun!
Woody confessed some time ago that, in spite of his generally sympathetic and solicitous understanding of those of us who consider Win7 to be the pinnacle of the MS Windows evolution, he has nevertheless been “assimilated by the Borg” (his words). Truth in advertising is always an admirable quality!
I expect this is an argument only time will settle.
Five or seven or 10 years from now, when Canadian Tech and the rest of us in the Rebel Alliance are still happily computing with Win7, having encountered no problems whatsoever, and the MS vanguard has likely moved well beyond Win10 to something even more bland, bloated, convoluted, overbearing and dysfunctional, there won’t be any point in declaring “We told you so!”
Why? Because we in Rebel Alliance will choose to be magnanimous in victory, realizing it was always about independently assessing risk and taking appropriate mitigation measures, guided here by Woody’s always truthful and objective observations, in spite of his Borg assimilation, NOT about winning an argument. We will be satisfied that we successfully fended off the Cassandras, who themselves will be in no mood to be reminded of the role they played.
Happy computing, whatever path you follow!
Then time will tell

will have all your data is long gone because some malware took advantage of an unpatched vulnerability that your wildly out of date antivirus couldn’t catch and you can’t use any peripherals like printers because the old ones have died and the new ones don’t come with Windows 7 drivers.
BTW: I heard this same song when Windows 7 came out. Why did you ever leave Windows XP??

AskWoody PlusNovember 2, 2020 at 1:09 pm #2309007If even resetting your browser doesn’t help, there’s not much left to look for.
When someone has a problem on only one computer, it usually means the problem is with only one profile on the computer. A quick check is creating another user account and seeing if the problem exists when accessing the site when logged on as this new user. If the problem is not present when using the new user account, the problem is somewhere in the person’s regular profile. THAT can be ugly to track down.
What I’ve done successfully is make a copy of the profile (from C:\Users\<Username>) and delete the profile from the System app (Properties –> Advanced System Settings –> Advanced tab –> User Profiles –> Settings). Note that you have to be logged in using a different account that has administrator rights to do this.
After restarting the machine, log in and wait while the machine makes a new profile for you and see if you still have the problem. If not, copy specific “human readable” folders like documents, pictures, music and videos, to the new profile. DO NOT try to copy the entire profile from the backup copy to the new one. That can REALLY screw things up!
If you still have the problem in the new profile, then it really may be time to go nuclear with the machine.
