Question: has anyone suffered a ‘Start PXE Over IPv4’ following a Windows 10 patching session? I’m keen to know.

      What do you mean “suffered”?
Has it prevented your machine running?
Is it just a note at boot? If so it’s a BIOS thing to allow easy deployment in large environments.
If you get it instead of booting then you have a disk boot failure. Boot from a recovery USB/CD and check the internal disk is OK.

When i’ve seen that, the harddrive died or the system doesn’t see a hard drive.

Might not be the HDD, it may be the HDD controller on the mobo that’s went AWOL
Hence data on the HDD should be ok for recovery using another device.

Thanks to all for the replies. Since, mysteriously, the laptop will boot OK when on battery but unplugged from the mains, I’m working on a supposition along ‘Microfix’s’ lines. Possibly  Intel chip and Power Controller need updating.

Have you checked the connections between the HDD and the motherboard?  A loose or corroded connection can make a HDD disappear.  If that is the case, disconnecting and then reconnecting can make it reappear.

I’ve experienced that a number of times over the years.
