I have two laptops: A Toshiba with W7 Home and an HP with Windows 7 Pro. Both laptops have Macrium Reflect Free. I want to create rescue disks. Two questions:

    1) Will one set of disks work on both computers?

    2) How can I check to see if the disks are working? I think my laptops first look to the HD to boot, so if I put in the disks I’m not sure if it will show me anything. Can I change the boot order temporarily just to check the disks. Also, what exactly am I checking? I assume just to see that it boots from the disk, or is there something additional I should check.

    Thanks

    Mel

If you are using the Linux Rescue CD most likely it will work on both. If using the PE Rescue Disc it might work. Discs are cheap, so why not burn both for each machine? That’s what I did just to have a backup of the backup.

You simply boot from the disc and see if they work. A Window will appear with instructions. Just back out at the right time.

I would change the boot order and leave it to boot from CD first. It does no harm to the machine. If there is nothing in the CD drive the machine simply goes to the next item in the boot list. If the CD doesn’t boot first you might have a problem changing the boot order if the machine crashes.

      1) Will one set of disks work on both computers?

      Yes
My bootable disks created with older Macrium versions work just fine both on my 8.1 desktop and Lenovo laptop.

      2) How can I check to see if the disks are working?

      Test them.
If you have a UEFI based BIOS, turn rapid boot off and ensure you can boot from the CD/DVD or USB first prior to testing.

Take the time to create BOTH the Linux, and the WinPE disks.
It’s the Linux disk that is easiest to create, but might not work on all systems. The Win PE WILL work on all newer Windows systems.

        JB:

How do I change the boot order? Do I press F2 and go to the settings upon boot-up?

Whatever combination or key that will get you into you BIOS upon startup.
From there you can go to the BIOS’s boot section.

Go to the Toshiba website and look for information pertaining to your BIOS, if it is not readily noticeable when you get into the BIOS.

You should see a splash screen when you boot. It should tell you which F key to use. Machines differ in the way the boot order is changed. Some you use the up and down arrows and others might use a key combination to change the boot order. It should give you the instructions.

When finished changing the order, Exit and save the changes. There should be instructions as what keys to press to exit and save the changes.
