• QuickTime bloat?

Not a big fan of QuickTime but needed to install it last weekend. Secunia advises today that there is an update available for QuickTime.

I downloaded QT using the link provided by Secunia. The download manager showed that this download was 50% larger than my download from last weekend.

I downloaded QT again from the Apple site in case the Secunia link pointed to the QT + ITunes download instead of the QT only download. Same bloated result. I tried another time with the same result.

Can anyone suggest why an upgrade from 7.62 to 7.64 would increase the size of the download from 20.9 MB to 30.9 MB? Does anyone else feel as paranoid as I do about this?

Try QuickTime Alternative at 10.7 MB. Don’t know whether it will do what you want, and anyway I try to avoid QuickTime like the plague!

Are you running that on Win 7? You shouldn’t have to unless you have ITunes. See Windows 7 to kill off QuickTime on PCs?.

Can’t think of a GOOD reason for that. However, I get the same large file you get. No plan to install it right away, though.

I failed to mention that my need for QT was as a plug-in for Firefox. Thank you all for your suggestions. I will look into these to see if there is a solution that applies.

My real query, though, was why there was such a big increase in the size of the download. I find this very suspicious given Apple’s penchant for including unrequested software (Safari, anyone?) in their updates.

        Paul,
I am not sure if this is relevant but I also downloaded the latest Quicktime (specifically selected QT only) and dear old Apple dumped 30+Mb of Apple Software Support into my programmes which I would need if I wanted iPod stuff, plus Apple Updates. So Quicktime and all the hanger-ons have now been axed off my pc forever.
Why do they insist on plonking unwanted/unneeded programmes onto computers without the users agreement?
        Ron
