I just went to a Web site that requires QuickTime, and discovered that my copy of QuickTime is out of date. No biggie. I hopped over to the Apple do

and then the corresponding Quicktime Lite for VCP:

Maybe all you need — best of luck!

GuestMarch 13, 2009 at 5:07 am #60046It appears that Cnet’s Shareware website may still offer it without iTunes. I’m downloading it now and see right off that the installer is a third the size of the one off Apple’s website. http://download.cnet.com/QuickTime/3000-2139_4-10002208.html?tag=mncol;psum

ManagerMarch 13, 2009 at 7:51 am #60047Sure enough, the CNET site has Quicktime Version 7.6.
Hans, I like the idea of using the Codec Package (and VLC), but this is one of the machines that I have to keep as close to kosher as possible.
By the way, I assume y’all know that Windows 7 is supposed to include native support for the MOV file format – thus eliminating every reason I know for using QuickTime. Some people think they have to use iTunes to feed their iPods. (iTunes requires QuickTime.) I switched to WinAmp for my iPods long ago.

InactiveMarch 14, 2009 at 10:25 am #60048I “second” Steve’s suggestion, “QuickTime Alternative”.
I’ve tried this slimmed-down version of QuickTime, and found it a lot more palatable than regular-flavor Quicktime, with less add-ons and pesky processes.Quote from Wikipedia:
“The differences between QuickTime Alternative and Apple Inc.’s QuickTime are their features, virtual size, and consumption of system resources. QuickTime Alternative is a smaller package because it lacks the non-essential additions present in Apple’s QuickTime, those being features not vital to playing .MOV files and streaming QuickTime media. In addition, QuickTime Alternative does not run background processes as its counterpart does, allowing it to require less system resources to operate.Because it is trimmer than Apple’s version, QuickTime Alternative is marketed to users who do not use QuickTime’s added features and or want a more efficient method of playing QuickTime content.
QuickTime Alternative also contains the QuickTime web browser plugin ”

Not for MOV files, but in general, if y’gotta use RealMedia *.RM files, I’d also recommend people install the slimmed-down, teeth-pulled version of RealMedia Player called “real media alternative”. -

In Firefox, if you have NoScript, you will have to allow all the Apple.com and Images.Apple.com scripts to get to the Windows version. It is a clean, stand-alone QuickTime installer. I always first remove the previous version and all of its components with Revo Uninstaller to clear any Apllication Data which may mess up the new installation or harbor leftover insecurities.

AskWoody_MVPMarch 17, 2009 at 2:09 am #60050I did encounter one problem when attempting to install the standalone Quicktime 7.6 program on my friend’s XP computer. If the setup program for QT 7.6 detects an older version of iTunes installed on a computer, it will prompt the user to upgrade iTunes to the latest version.
no problem. I also downloaded & installed the latest available version of iTunes from the Apple web site. heck, my longtime friend uses an iPod and connects it to his computer and uses the iTunes & Quicktime software.

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
There are two radio buttons. One to just download QuickTime, and one to also download iTunes. If you click the first option, it just downloads QuickTime.
