For the last week I have been on the computer and normally I am on Chrome checking WS’s etc. and the computer just stops responding and things get really weird. I can move the mouse wherever I want but can’t get anything to respond when I click on it. I thought it may be a Chrome problem but this afternoon it did it while trying to save a word 2013 docx, no Chrome involved. As I was looking at the desktop, the Sticky notes would get a border around them then go away and then ( one at a time ) the sticky notes would disappear then reappear and the taskbar would disappear and then come back. No matter what I clicked, nothing would work. I have tried Ctrl Alt Del and then choose shut down but it can’t seem to close the running programs, so I end up turning off the power supply.
Today I ran MalwareBytes free and it found nothing so I decided to try ESET scanner and it D/Lded the signature files and started running as I was busy with something else. While running, it showed 7 problems but I went out of the room as it was running and when I came back the computer had restarted.
So I looked in the event viewer and saw that a minidmp file had been recorded. I downloaded Blue Screen Viewer and ran it. Does anyone know what all this means??

      STOP 0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
Usual causes: Defective hardware (particularly memory – but not just RAM), Faulty system service, Antivirus, Device driver, NTFS corruption, BIOS

With a DirectX driver being ‘blamed’ and the weird on screen happenings, it could easily be the graphics card failing or needing reseating.

    • #1590751

“PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA” is almost always a memory error caused by data stored in memory being corrupted. “Memory” can be RAM (Random Access Memory – the RAM chip(s) on the computer’s motherboard) or “Virtual Memory” (the “pagefile.sys” file on the HDD).

A very common cause of RAM errors is tarnished/dirty contacts on the RAM chips. You can clean the contacts by carefully & gently rubbing them with a soft white pencil rubber/eraser. Then use a soft brush to brush off any particles (a dry soft-bristle toothbrush works well). After cleaning the RAM contacts it is a good idea to run a test on the RAM (my favourite RAM test program is Memtest86 ).

Another common cause is filesystem problems on the HDD. To check/correct such run chkdsk c: /r from an admin-level Command Prompt. You will be prompted to restart the computer and chkdsk will run before Windows loads (will take quite some time).

I have run chkdsk /f a couple of times but no joy there, I haven’t tried /r yet.
I have a NVIDIA GeForce 660 TI card and on 1/26/17 I uninstalled GeForce Experience, I’m now wondering if that has something to do with all this because as Satrow suggest’s, it seems like it may be graphics related.
I did make a restore point before uninstalling that part of the software. NVIDIA’s auto updating program ( GeForce Experience ) has it’s hooks into everything related to the drivers, etc. for their cards.
Later today, or when I have time, I may try to go back to that restore point. If that doesn’t work, I may resort to my backup HDD to see if there is a difference.
      Any thought’s??

I second Coochin’s suggestion to run a memory test. While I used to run 3rd party RAM testers, I find that Windows 7 now has a perfectly good memory tester.

Select Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Windows Memory Diagnostic. Then just follow the prompts; the computer will reboot to run the memory test which will take several minutes. When it is done the computer will reboot again back into Windows.

Just as with good disk testing, these diagnostics are best run with a minimal OS and no other applications running; that’s why the reboots are needed.

    • #1590784

A memory test would be more useful if the PC used an APU/iGPU but as it uses an add-in GPU, and given that the major signs listed are all visual/graphics -related, with the last call in the stack coming from a DirectX driver, I’d delay that until after the graphics card/drivers have been tested more thoroughly.

Run some graphics tests like Furmark, borrow a known good card, fit yours in a known good PC, remove the card and test with the iGPU only, …

    • #1590787

I just finished running the Memory Diagnostic test ( before you posted Satrow ) and the test found no problems.

Run some graphics tests like Furmark, borrow a known good card, fit yours in a known good PC, remove the card and test with the iGPU only, …

I can look up “Furmark” to run it but fitting this card to another PC isn’t an available option.

Memtest86+, with at least 7 runs is my preference. that’s often an all night task.

Do you not have a CPU/motherboard -based GPU option so that you can test without the card?

Furmark requires watching carefully, you are the safety net: http://www.carrona.org/furmark.html for details and download link.

      @ satrow

Last week I checked for updates for my collection of boot CDs and downloaded the latest Memtest86 (v7.2 13 December 2016).

When I checked the Memtest86+ download page the latest release was still dated late 2013, so I prefer to use Memtest86 rather than Memtest86+.

    • #1590802

      Is it any better?

    • #1590803

      Is it any better?

I suspect Memtest86 is more compatible with newer hardware.

    • #1590805

      Maybe 😉

    • #1590807

I decided to try the Sys Restore point ( that I mentioned in Post #4 ) before going any further since that is approx. when the problems started. So now I have the GeForce Experience back and will see how this goes.
I had to re-download Chrome since it was ver. 55 at the time of the SR point and it wouldn’t open since it had updated to ver. 56 in the meantime. I’m sure there are other things that may need refreshing also.
If this works as it did before, and the GeForce Experience uninstall was the problem, then I have a new dilemma of getting rid of GeForce Experience somehow.
Anyway, I am on hold for the time being and will post back after giving this some time to work.

Wait, what? So the plus is actually a minus??

With certain types of ‘utility’ software, accurate results and lack of false positives are more important than dates. The MemTest86 now owned by Passmark spent time without any ‘modernising’ updates, perhaps they’ve now caught up with MemTest86+, perhaps not.

RAM (esp. compatibility) issues since DDR3/4 have been much less of a problem than with previous versions thus tests and published results seem to have been declining in recent years, until I see a trend of 86+ missing the mark, or a good comparison test across recent chipsets, I’ll continue to suggest 86+ as being the ‘better’ of the two.

A quick look at some sites that offer BSOD help suggests that they also prefer MemTest86+.

I used Memtest86+ for some months until about mid-2014 but in several cases the Memtest86+ CD failed to boot on newer hardware but Memtest86 did boot.

As far as the accuracy of the tests performed by them is concerned I don’t see any real difference – both seem to be reliable RAM-test programs.

1- Not sure what changed with the lounge but I am no longer receiving updates to the post via email.
2- From the memory test conversation I assume that the memory test that I ran from windows is held in low regard??
3- So far, so good as to the non-responding and graphics weirdness. I’m assuming that it had to do with my uninstalling NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience. I assume also that I may need to uninstall the whole kit&caboodle of the NVIDIA drivers/updater and just go looking for a safe driver by itself to install from NVIDIA since the updater ( GeForce Experience ) is hooked into everything.
The reason I wanted to get rid of GeForce Experience in the first place is the new TOS in it’s update which allows them to sell your info to whomever they please.

Windows memory tests are pretty basic and cannot be relied on, esp. when it gives the all clear.

Nvidia’s GeForce Experience can be installed via Programs in Control Panel. All most users need is the Graphics Driver, some games would need PhysX (that should be a standalone with any game that requires it), maybe Shadowplay or w/e the streaming part is called. When installing Nvidia Drivers (like any software) use the Custom options and deselect any you don’t want.

Agreed. It makes far more sense to boot from a Memtest86 or Memtest86+ CD anyhow. I gave up on the Windows memory tests years ago after several “all clear” cases turned out to be wrong when subsequent tests from boot CDs found errors.

Well, Right after I posted and logged out of WS and closed Chrome. I went to the desktop after a few minutes and it was Locked up although I could move the mouse/cursur anywhere I wanted to, it just couldn’t activate anything. Another thing different was that I wasn’t getting those flashing graphics problems. I used ctrl alt del to get to a restart but windows wouldn’t finish shutdown so I once again turned off the power.
There was no minidmp this time though. From the logs, it looks like Google Earth had just finished updating when all this happened.

Evidently the restore point didn’t bring back everything. When I clicked on GeForce Experience, it was not found. Soooo, I bit the bullet and updated GeForce Experience and got the latest and greatest drivers and sooooo far things have been ok. Evidently the GeForce Experience has hooks deep into the system and it rebels if you try to remove it.:(

UPDATE : Tonight I was on the WS lounge with Chrome and all of a sudden it became unresponsive/sloooow again. I managed to close chrome after about 10 mins. and opened task manager after a wait and all processes showed 00 but CPU usage was 100 %. Applications showed Notepad ( which I had minimized ) unresponsive and Sticky Notes unresponsive.
The HDD light wasn’t blinking at all.
I finally got to shutdown and clicked on it. Even clicking on force close, sticky notes and notepad wouldn’t close, so I used ctrl alt del and tried shutdown from there. It stayed on logging off for 15 mins then went to shutdown but I waited for another 15 mins and nothing so I turned off the power supply.

I’m trying IE 11 today to see if that makes a difference. Looks like this thread is getting long and forgotten.
I can’t seem to pinpoint what would be running with Task Manager not showing anything other than 100 % CPU usage when the computer slows to a crawl.

Did you install the full GeForce Experience or go custom and install only what you need (Drivers only?)?

Have you checked Reliability Reports? They can be pretty much humanly readable, unlike many logs.

    • #1591081

Yes, I installed the full GeForce Experience since the problems seemed to start when I tried to uninstall the previous GeForce Experience.
Reliability Monitor say’s Sticky Notes stopped responding and was shut down but the time stamp is when I was trying to shut down the computer.
NOTE: When I booted up this morning ( I had to use “Start Windows Normally” since I killed the power last night ), ALL of the sticky notes are gone from my desktop this time. Probably because I tried forcing them to close.

What about Reliability Reports over the previous days, do you see anything that might be related, any pattern?

    • #1591085

The previous critical events were “Windows was not shutdown properly”, obviously when I had to power off. On 2/8/17 it shows the minidmp that I posted earlier in the thread.
So basically, no more info than that in Reliability history. The only other info I could find was in post 24 that I found in event viewer.

NOTE: I got on my Win 10 laptop just now and looked at Reliability Monitor and every exclamation point you see in the screenshot is a sticky note failure to update. I never got those before going to 1607 on this W10 laptop.
It makes me wonder if something odd is going on with Sticky Notes on both W7 & W10. I posted a question quite some time ago about WU showing up in Sys Restore all the time on my W7 machine but there was never a record of what it had done.
I just went to Services on my W7 machine and set WU to manual since it was set to auto.

Well I thought things had worked themselves out since things worked fine for the 13th, 14th, and all day today but tonight ( the 15th ) I had just logged into WS on Chrome and it became completely unresponsive again. I managed to get to Task Manager and again processes all showed 00 but CPU showed 100% with 102 processes running which is normally around 99.
Another thing I noticed was that even the clock in the notification area stopped at 5:36 pm and it stayed at that time.
I had to use ctrl alt del and got to where I could start shutdown but things just wouldn’t stop so I turned off the power supply again.
I guess ( unless someone has some really good advice ), I’ll have to try my cloned disk from 1/2/17 and hope all goes well with that.
Would tweaking. com be of any help? If so how do you use it, since I have never run it.
      Thanks for any advice.

Update: Since no one is responding to this thread any longer, I guess I will post my progress so far.
1- The “ESRV_SVC_QUEENCREEK” error that I posted in #24 seems to be related to the “Intel Update Utility” ver. 2.6 so I uninstalled that.
2- As I mentioned previously, MS Sticky Notes seemed to be mentioned in every “Non-Responding” lockup so I downloaded a program called “Stickies” and it works better than MS Sticky Notes.
3- So far ( Knock on wood ), things seem to be ok but will have to see if it last’s.

Looks to me like your recent issues began on the 9th but the 13th had an awful lot going on. You’ll need to drill down in Reliability History from the 9th forward to see if you can find any common factors, ensure that you push the buttons to check for any potential fixes.

It looks mostly like memory corruption: could be hardware (RAM/HDD, ~pagefile), 3rd party drivers interfering with data/drivers already loaded into RAM, or some virus/malware infection/remnants (check Defender/MSE logs for clues, run Malwarebytes with the rootkit option switched on + plus a good Cloud-based AV). Post the logs here for checking.

Disable CCleaner from auto-starting at Boot, pointless removing valuable troubleshooting data during a period where the OS and multiple programs are crashing/hanging.

With 930GB of drive space across two drives and 800GB free space, the default W7 defragger run ~4x per annum would be good enough on your rig, loading a 3rd party defragger at every boot is pretty pointless. I’ve seen a few cases where BSODs were either down to 3rd party defrag drivers directly, or they were strongly implicated by the timing of the crashes. Clean is good.

      In a similar vein:
Do you really need Java? In the browser, it’s malware/exploit kit bait, esp. with IE.
All the cruft installed by default by Nvidia – if you don’t need it, uninstall it (3D, Streaming, etc.).
Similar with the ASUS ‘utility’ software – just uninstall it, esp. AISuite, also check whether the other ASUS Services are really needed, if in doubt, remove them.
Pretty sure you don’t need IntelRST either, it’s for SSD caching and RAID setups, I use the default MS drivers, 2+ fewer drivers to load/interfere (the MS drivers load anyway).

Thanks for looking at that report Satrow!!
As to Reliability Monitor History, there is no help by clicking on anything related to any of the errors so I listed them and maybe you might have a clue, and there is a lot to digest from your critique.
2/7/17- “Windows was not Properly shutdown”
2/8/17- 3 events in this order= “Windows was not Properly shutdown”, “Windows stopped working” ( this is when that earlier minidmp was written ), “Shut down unexpectedly”
      2/9/17- No errors
2/10/17- “Windows was not Properly shutdown”
2/11/17- No errors ( Informational events show the update of NVIDIA graphics drivers )
2/12/17- 2 errors in this order= “Windows was not Properly shutdown”, StikyNot.exe Stopped responding
      2/13/17- No errors
      2/14/17- “There are no reports”
2/15/17- “Windows was not Properly shutdown”
2/16/17- No errors ( Shows that Uninstall of Intel Update Utility 2.6 was succesful )
2/17/17- 2 critical events= “IEXPLORE.EXE stopped responding”, “IEXPLORE.EXE stopped responding”, ( Information 1st event ) The program IEXPLORE.EXE version 11.0.9600.18538 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.

After installing the NVIDIA GeForce Updater, uninstalling the Intel Update Utility, and no longer using the MS Sticky Notes, I haven’t had any problems so far but will consider/take your advice as posted.

I see some time (zone?) differences with those logged in the Windows Error Reporting (WER) section of MSInfo32.nfo. ‘My’ errors on the 9th (includes the BSOD from the OP) are yours from the 8th, check the WER (last) section of MSInfo32.

The errors on the 13th were all at 20:30 – 31, perhaps clearing a logjam of reports to MS? Or when you forced a recheck looking for fixes?

The minidmp was created on the 8th as recorded in event viewer and shown in my post #1. Also, on the 9th the times for 2 of the reports are from when the computer was shutoff.

I quoted the times I see, perhaps Windows converts them from UTC originals to the TZ the NFO is opened on. Check with MSinfo32 yourself.

    • #1591760

I went to Run>MSinfo32.exe and looked at the current Windows Error Reporting log and it has the same times listed as the Sysnative report. Another anomaly is that it shows nothing at all for the last time it locked up, 2/15/17.

Evidently getting rid of the Intel Update Utility and replacing the MS Sticky notes with “Stickies” has made an improvement. I haven’t had a problem since 2/17/17.
