I inherited a desktop running Windows 2016 Datacenter and having been using it for the past year without any problems.  Yesterday, I installed the December Office updates as well as the 2019-12 Cumulative Update (KB4530689).   After all successfully installed, I rebooted and now can no longer connect via remote desktop. When I checked the services, the Remote Desktop Services service is no longer listed as a service.

I have not been able to get the service to reinstall. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do?  I don’t want to have to start over and reinstall everything.

I’m not familiar with Windows 2016 Datacenter but, came across a similar issue albeit a different timeline over on Technet with a fix using powershell for a missing snap-in.

Have you tried uninstalling KB4530689 to see if the issue disappears?

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

Someone spent thousands of dollars to put 2016 Datacenter on a desktop?

      Interesting.

I did try uninstalling the KB4530689 update, but it did not restore the Remote Desktop Services service.

We are not running RDS, I am referring to the stock service that is part of the base install of Windows.  I updated two other Datacenter servers without any issue.

If I check services, the Remote Desktop Services service is completely missing on my computer, but is listed on the other two and I can successfully connect to them via RDP.

I got it to work by exporting the registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService from a working machine and imported into mine and rebooted.  Remote Desktop Services is again listed as a service and running.

Thanks BHolson825. That helped me fix the problem I was having with a Windows 10 1903 box.
