    I’m stumped. scratch

My boss emailed me a .ppt file, which I edited and saved in a shared folder on a network drive. This morning, she opened the file and made some changes, but when she tried to save it, she got the message that it’s a read-only file, and she had to save it under a different name.

I checked the original .ppt file, which is clearly NOT marked as Read-Only under General/atttributes. I looked at the NFS Attributes, which show Read, Write, and Execute permissions for Owner and Group; I added the same permissions to “Other” and clicked “Apply” and “OK”. I opened the file, made a change, and saved and closed the file successfully.

Next, I called my boss and asked her to try to make a change. Again, she got the message that the file is Read-Only and was unable to save her changes to the original file.

I went back to the file and looked at the properties again, and the permissions I had added for “other” had been removed. However, “Read-Only” is still not checked.

Does anyone have any idea why another user would not be able to save changes to this file? Or why the permission settings didn’t take? Thanks!

Assuming that all the obvious read-only things have been taken care of (which it sounds like from your post). I have found that sometimes PPT spontaneously “locks” a file (I thought it was just me shrug).
You can try opening the file using the code mentioned in this knowledge base article How to Use the Presentations.Open Method.
You’ll need to place the code in a different presentation and run it from there.

      Cheers

        Thank you, Catharine.

I looked at the knowledge base article, and it’s way over my head. I think for now we’ll just have to keep saving the file with a new name, and try very hard to remember to delete the older, unedited versions.

I appreciate your help. I don’t necessarily believe that misery loves company, but I am comforted to know that I’m not the only one who has experienced this problem!

NFS (Sun) or NTFS (Microsoft)? If it’s NTFS, there is a separate “Change” permission, in addition to Read and Write, that is necessary for someone to update a file.

        It’s NFS.

We use the shared folder to post files for several people to work on (read, write, print, save, save-as, whatever). Most of the files are Word (.doc), although we also share an Access database and several Excel files. This PowerPoint (.ppt) file is the first one that presented this problem.

        Thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry to be way late with this info, but you might check into http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…b;EN-US;Q331519%5B/url%5D

It seems to describe the issue well, and it sounds as if turning of SMB signing might resolve the issue.

Thanks, Echo. I’ve printed that out; I haven’t yet figured out if it applies in my situation, but it may be worth a try!

Hi Echo, welcome to the Lounge. Your personal page cracked me up.

Since you always have a link handy, just wanted to let you know you can make them live by surrounding them with this markup:

            URL-Goes-Here

Lots more toys on the “1-Click TagPanel,” but this one will save the Moderators some time as they go through the threads makin’ links.

oops! Obviously, I’m not used to these newfangled-type HTML boards, hehehe.
Thanks for the tips. I’m all for anything that makes your lives easier!

No problem. Your help on these various issues far outweighs the minor issue of making links. Who knows, maybe you’ll be using the animated emoticons (“smilies”) in a few days…

Boy are we please to see you in the PPT forum – I’m an average user at best, so many of the questions stump me and I spend hours searching for answers or experimenting. And I can see you have figured things out – I was going to send you a private message suggesting you change your signature to an active link, but I see you’ve already done so. Thanks for helping out here – it’s a great place! bravo cheers salute

Thanks, Wendell. I’ll look forward to contributing.
