I recently installed 2002, and there is one feature that was in 2000 which I can’t seem to find. When reading a message with the URL hidden beneath some text, I used to be able to hover over the text and the actual URL would read in the status bar below. Now I cannot find the URL anywhere, unless I go to View Source, which is difficult to read through. Was this a misguided change, or am I missing something?

GuestOctober 4, 2001 at 3:36 pm #1788878Hmmm….that is interesting. Yes, I do use Word as my editor, but I am still using Word (albeit XP, not 2000). My default browser is Opera 5.12, and that has not changed. On occasion I use IE 5.0. I KNOW I used to be able to read those URL’s, as I used that feature all the time. I tried to look on Microsoft’s site for information, but had no luck. Apparently, I don’t know what to search for.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 20, 2004 at 8:28 pm #1808180Just to add to the above.
I used Outlook2000 NOT using Word as the email editor (I agree with Woody on that one!), from IE5 – 5.5 – 6 and the URL in the status bar has always been there, upgrade to Outlook XP and bam, it is gone…
There has been talk about opening the email (not using the preview pane) and with the left button dragging the link to the subject line. Which does show the URL, but you could hardly call that simple and straightforward. I religiously use the preview pane (with belt and braces firewall and virus scan, so no problem) and do not actually ever open an email to a separate window, I don’t want to start now!
And I would love to be able to see how many emails X of Y, not the percentage, I have left to download…

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 21, 2004 at 6:03 pm #1808185Personally I think the preview pane is EVIL. I use the keyboard for most actions in order to speed up my work, and when I select a junk mail for deletion the last thing I want is for the mail to be shown as I do this. The worst consequence of this is that it actually profilerates the use of junk mail by companies. Many of them are HTML mails and the companies track whether or not components of the mails (e.g. images) are downloaded. This way they can tell if they mail is viewed or not and assess whether their junk mail is working. The upshot of this is that someone simply selecting a mail and deleting immediately when using the preview pane tells the junk mail sender that the mail has been ‘viewed’ and encourages them to send more junk mail.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 21, 2004 at 9:14 pm #1808187I agree with that point. Which is why on my deleted folder (where 99% of my spam gets put) it is turned off.
There is still that time when you have to open an email to check that it IS spam before deleting. I do this every now and again, as I have been caught by someone sending me something that I wanted to read, but it got caught by my spam filter, and I deleted it unread. Got me into trouble, so now I am more cautious

AskWoody_MVPJanuary 21, 2004 at 10:51 pm #1808188With Outlook 2003 there are more settings that prevent “reporting back”, which make the use of the preview much safer. The images are not down loaded until given the OK, which is where some of the report back is being used.
