I open PDF documents in LibreOffice, then you can save in Word format. There is a portable version which doesn’t require installation.

Thank you. it works. Not perfect though but I think there is no such things as perfect with PDF to Word.

You are correct that there is no such thing as perfect with conversion to Word from any source. Such conversions may look and print fine but editing them can be a real pain. As macropod pointed out, Word 2013 opens pdf documents and can save them in Word format. Again, though, this is a conversion process.

Best solution is to get the document used to produce the pdf. I know that this is often not available.

I use the free version of Libre Office to read PDF’s.I tried to save a PDF to WORD format, but ‘save’ is grayed out. Do you know if this is just a feature of a paid version?

      Have you tried Word 2013?

Many if not most who use PDF format to publish their data do so because it is difficult to copy and edit, even though some do for its near universal readability.

        I agree.

That is why I send documents to others in pdf when I do not expect them to be edited. I am simply pointing out that if the OP wants to edit a document that is in PDF the most efficient way to do that is to obtain the original source (non-pdf) document.

When I send a pdf document, I certainly do not want it to be easy for someone to alter.

Security by obsurity (or in this case, security by ‘it’s hard to convert’) is a lost cause. If there aren’t methods available to make a PDF editable (and there are), there will be (more, better, easier, and free). The whole concept of DRM is doomed. If you don’t want people to replicate/modify a document, then print it on paper, hand it to them, let them read it, take it back, shred it, and hope they don’t recall enough to recreate the important bits. I work under the premise that if a person is allowed to see a document, in any form, they can and will take it. Heck, toss it on a screen, screen grab it, OCR the output, boom…they own the doc. If the content is worth taking, they’ll take it and convert it to something they can use.

PDFs are intended to make it easy for people who don’t have the source program used to create the document to read it, that’s all.

I wonder if any of you have tried “Sumatra.” I have and it works very well for me–small footprint, simple, and if all you want to do is convert pdf to word it works great.

Libre is French for “Free” maybe more, so I doubt it.

Select File > Save As. Now you can save in Word format.

Two things, one is that LibreOffice Writer may open a .pdf file in Draw and the other that with a New blank document the Save is dimmed by default.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

I have just tested this by opening Writer, selecting File > Open, change the file type to PDF, select a file. Then it’s File > Save As. Works a treat.

      cheers, Paul

Paul-where do I “change the file type to PDF”-I don’t see that option
Thanks so much for your help

Open Writer and select File > Open.
Click the “all files” drop down in the bottom right corner and scroll to the bottom. “PDF” will be about 2/3 of the way up the selection, see attached screen shot.

      cheers, Paul

Unfortunately you may have to install some extra software.

I find PDF2WORD Converter by Bio PDF to be very good. I have an early version of the one found here http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-tools/PDF/PDF2Word-Converter.shtml .

      Works like a charm.

Recognizing the question is about Word, the following will be meaningless to many. No one seems to have concerns about accessibility issues.

If you need to deal with accessibility, in MS Office or where the content will be later distributed as PDF or HTML, I suggest simple, program-based solutions are unlikely.

Is the converted Word file the primary use format? If not, the solution relies on the Word user, not PDF-to-Word.

First, remember PDF is designed for print integrity. Second, think about empowering the Word user by introducing accessiblity in terms of word processing, not desktop publishing. Lastly, compare content distribution on the web, where WYSIWYG has low value.

      Happy New Year.

I use Omnipage Ultimate, expensive but sometimes offered cheaply. Very efficient conversion of all files into Word or Excel. But no good if you can’t install software.

I used the PDF tools from Nuance. The software is not terribly expensive and it has a lot of decent tools. The only problem I have had with this company is that it’s customer service has not evolved from the “concept stage”. If you have a problem with their applications, you are going to crawl over broken glass to get some help. This also lightning PDF but as mentioned before, depending on which version of Microsoft Word that you have, word will save as a PDF if you have the driver.

You can use BBCodes to format your content.
Your account can't use all available BBCodes, they will be stripped before saving.
