Recommend duplicate photo finder?

I am reaping the the rewards of playing fast and easy w/ my photo management. I am looking for a program that can find dups and show me the photo and info and allow me to delete or tag the file I do not want. I found dupeGuru Picture Edition in a search. It is not mentioned in Gizmos Freeware site and none of what I saw recommended seem to do what I am searching for. Does any one have a recommendation ?

I’ve used CCleaner for this sort of task…pretty rudimentary, but did the job I needed.

Go to Tools>>Duplicate finder and there are search options therein.

Thanks Trev, that looks better than some others I’ve tried (including Picasa) and it’s with something I’ve already got!

I use a defunct program from Prismatic Software called Dup Detector – it analyses the content of the images, in terms of edges, gradients, colours, luminance etc – so it can find crops, mirrors, flips, greyscale copies. It comes with an excellent CHM help manual

Most modern equivalent programs (like Dupguru) are in the ‘dumb it down’ camp. Dup Detector is in the ‘you may learn something’ camp. I first used on Windows 2000 I’m now using on Windows 10/1511.

I am back to photo management 🙁
Dup Detector seems to be ‘owned’ by keronsoft at this point. I am looking at a softpedia d/l that seems to be a newer version of it.

Duplicate Cleaner is the best I’ve used and even the free version does more than most people would need. Some duplicate searching programs can be decidedly dangerous but Duplicate Cleaner does its best to warn you at every step.

I usually choose to watch the MD5 # matching column as this will show you duplicates even if you’ve changed the file name – the classic case being where you’ve copied the original camera generated file numbers to one folder and then gone on to copy and rename individual files to another folder.

VisiPics is a free tool that compares the contents of graphic files. I’ve used it to clean up my extensive picture archive (personal and saved from the Internet for wallpaper) and found I had a lot of duplicates with different file names and sizes but otherwise the same.

I use 2 different programs, Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder 1.1 & ImgSearch 3.0.8. Both programs are free, the difference with these 2 programs & all the others I have tried. They give you identical to identical but different sizes they both will give you pictures that appear similar in software but you can ignore them. Both programs will show you images of the pictures. Awesome Duplicate prog will give you 2 pic at a time to work with, & ImgSearch will give you 2 + hope this helps

Duplicate Cleaner is the best I’ve used and even the free version does more than most people would need.

The latest free version does not do photos, so you can only do identical files.

Hi Guys,

If you are willing to spend a few buck on a photo editor and manager (at a small price compared to Photoshop) I would recommend a less known program.
I purchased Zoner Photo Studio a few years ago. It is on version 18. It is also a photo manager, so it catalogs your photos when you install it and puts all the photos in its catalog. When I decided to eliminate a bunch of photos that were duplicated from several download sources which had not been cleaned out from the last download I tried the duplicate remover. It worked so fast and without any input (after setting the parameters) that I was afraid I had lost a lot of photos. (Of course I had a backup). . It was done perfectly and in chronologic order set up in files based on download date. Truly well done. No I am not a shill for Zoner. I just could not afford all the Photoshop upgrades even though I used it for years. Anybody want a free Version7? (Ha ha).

A couple of years ago I looked at a pile of image comparison programs, free or limited demos of ones that were not too expensive.
My requirements were –

[*] match tiff originals to jpegs
[*] they had to identify jpegs where I had rewritten portrait image according to the exif orientation flag.
[*] they had to identify images that had been somewhat cropped
[*] they had to identify images that had been rescaled/resampled to lower resolution.

The result then was that none satisfied all the criteria, and some of them failed all criteria. Some of the “high degree of match” results were quite laughable.

This has improved lately.
For identifying identical files, I have long recommended Easy Duplicate Finder (despite the developer’s annoying habit of regularly reworking the user interface).
He also makes Duplicate photo cleaner, which is a bit of a misnomer, because it has a “degree of similarity threshold setting” so the images do not have to be exact duplicates. It does a good enough job that I thought it was worth paying for.

I am currently using a Duplicate finder called “Easy Duplicate Finder”. This is a paid program, but is an excellent general duplicate finder. It can do pictures, video, or any type of extention type search. It groups duplicates together, with a sequence number, and even does a preview of the picture, or allow you to play a video. By default it keeps the first version and flags additional copies for deletion. You can check and uncheck as desired as it shows both the file name and the directory path. It does not allow you to delete all copies though. You must keep at least one copy. There are multiple options when you delete, such as move to an alternate folder, move to the the trash bin, and several others. You can filter to search one or several folders, and even skip checking folders.

I agree with this evaluation, but it will only detect images whose files are completely identical, either in content, or name, or whatever other option is chosen (is also compares music metadata, but that is not useful for photos).

Many of the other programs, such as Zoner, are also like this. Once you have done something trivial, like add a bit of metadata or resave with a different compression level, then the files are no longer equal and they will not be identified. This may or may not be what you want.

The alternate process of correlating actual image content is far more difficult and time-consuming, which is why not many do it well.

An alternative that would be suitable for many purposes is simply to compare the Exif:DateTaken value (aka DateTimeOriginal) value. This should identify all photos derived from each original, unless you are in the habit of taking lots of high speed shots.

I am glad I followed this up, because I just discovered that DupeGuru comes in 3 flavours – including the Picture Edition, which does precisely this as one of its options. This wasn’t obvious to me when I looked the first time as I just followed Google to the dupeguru home page. And it runs very quickly in the date taken mode.
It also has a full photo similarity mode. On my quick tests, I would say DupeGuru (photo Edition) does a similar quality job to Duplicate Photo Cleaner. Neither is perfect, and each program found modified image files that the other didn’t, so DupeGuru-PE certainly wins on value for money (free).

Update, following a bit more testing of DupeGuru:
Pros:

[*]reads 16bit Tiff images and can match to 8-bit jpegs
[*]understands Exif orientation flag, and identifies jpegs with lossless rotation
[*] can do exact match on Exif date taken

Cons:

[*]Cannot read Canon raw images (.CR2)
[*]Cannot notice rotated images (e.g. if exif orientation flag was wrong and I fixed rotation with software)
[*] very poor matching to original if a colour cast was corrected.

With the exception of the 16-bit tiffs, the list is opposite for Duplicate Photo Cleaner (with suitable options set)
