When using the Internet, the following message randomly appears
Internet Explorer has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available

The refurbished wireless Verizon-Dlink ADSL2+ DSL-2750B router has been installed for about 6 weeks
    — The purpose of acquiring a wireless router was so his wife could use her Kindle
    — His desktop computer isn’t wireless so he has the wireless router hard wired to his computer
Originally a Verizon wired modem was used probably a Westell model
    — My friend will call me tonight when he gets out of work on what the exact model is

When he was using the original Verizon (Westell?) wired modem, he never had this problem and now he does
    — As a workaround, he has unchecked enable protection mode in the Security page of Internet Options
He called Verizon for help but all they did was notice he also has Google Chrome on his computer so recommended using it
    — However all that is is another workaround
    — I don’t have an issue when someone wants to use a different browser but I feel that should be by choice
In my mind, his IE9 worked without any problems when he was using his original Verizon (Westell?) wired modem and as soon as he started using the refurbished Verizon-Dlink ADSL2+ DSL-2750B the random Internet Explorer has stopped working message kicked in

In the course of trying to help him out I have the following questions

Should he have left the original Verizon (Westell?) wired modem in and connected it to the refurbished wireless Verizon-Dlink ADSL2+ DSL-2750B router which in turn connects to the computer?
    — According to the D-Link DSL-2750B Wireless Gateway manual I found on the Internet at ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Broadband/dsl2750B/Manual/DSL-2750B_Manual.pdf that isn’t the case
    — I know it may sound like a stupid question but I need to verify how I’m interpreting what I’m observing
    — I don’t see the refurbished wireless Verizon-Dlink ADSL2+ DSL-2750B router identified as a modem/router but on the website, I see it described as a Wireless Gateway (Does that cover the modem/router feature I’m wondering about?)
    — I also noticed in the manual that there is a bridging section and I interpret that to mean the unit has to be bridged with whatever modem is in use (Well, I suppose that section may not need to apply)
Now why do those questions come to mind?
    — When I had installed a Linksys wireless router on my XP computer I had to leave my DSL Westell Model E90-610015-06 in
    — When my son who has Comcast was provided a D-Link wireless router by Comcast on his Vista computer, he still had to leave his Comcast unit in
Is it possible to configure the refurbished wireless Verizon-Dlink ADSL2+ DSL-2750B router to work properly with IE9 just like his original Verizon (Westell?) wired modem did ?

Now onto the workaround of unchecking enable protection mode
    — I feel that enable protection mode should not be left unchecked
    — In addition my friend isn’t using Google Chrome as his standard browser as recommended by Verizon
    — He is using IE9 since that is what he is use to
    — I need opinions on that please

Problem solved. Internet searches before & after my thread were essentially useless. However, I made sure my friends computer was as clean as possible and malware free. Of course the problem persisted but at least I knew the computer was as clean as possible to work with.
      I created a restore point
Then I installed CCleaner. Ran the cleaner without any problems.
Then ran the registry cleaner with an umpteen number of issues.
I unchecked all registry items except the first one (Missing shared DLL’s) and there were only a couple of items to delete which we did.
I instructed him to run each subsequent item every other day and he did although if there was only one or two items more, to go ahead & clean them out and move on to the next item without waiting the extra 2 days.
      — I’m not in favor of running a registry cleaner “in full force” at first
      — If someone wants to use a registry cleaner it should be used as a maintenance procedure vs a fix it procedure
      — He didn’t notice which entry he came to that did have most the upmteen items but after cleaning them out, his computer runs great again (I suspect it was the Intaller section but I wasn’t there so I don’t really know). All he knows is that he kept going to get his computer running back to normal
So he has enable protection mode checked back in, is running the registry cleaner for all items in the list and doesn’t have any problems with the Internet Explorer has stopped working message anymore
      — Although Verizon help wanted him to change browser he doesn’t have to; his IE9 works just fine
Why did CCleaner work, who knows? It worked
