Question please. Running w 7 64 bit and i like ie 9 so far no problems and dont want any. Susan says in her article that you should keep ie updated and there is all this discussion about ie 10 and 11 what kind of trouble am i asking for? Thank you.

You should update to IE10 if you are still using IE9, there’s not too much of a noticeable difference.
I’m using IE10 in Windows 8 at the moment and I’m in no rush to upgrade it to 11.
Personally I think it’s a bit buggy and over the top security wise at the moment.

Example:
1 For a while when I was downloading something in IE11, I would get a “_” before the exe, instead of a “.” it was a bit irritating.
2 I felt some of the security settings like smart screen filter was a bit over the top too.

It’s not that bad though, one can work around it, but for me, like I said, it was a bit irritating.

I second Clint’s opinion. I am still with IE 10 on Windows 7 and I have hidden the update to upgrade to IE 11. Seems it wasn’t quite ready to see the light of day, IMO.

IE 10 would be a viable update for Win 7. Especially in Win 7, IE 11 may not yet be a good choice. In fact, even in Win 8.1, IE 11 can be finicky. I believe that ultimately it will be my browser of choice (I prefer IE over FF or Chrome), but for now I’m using both IE 11 and FF 25.0.1 for my browsing.

IE11 did the same with my banking. After beating on the keyboard for an hour I finally stumbled on the solution. When I opened the home page for IE11, I clicked on “page” (setup?) and associated my bank home page (Added to the list). Banking now works as it should. I use two different computers with my laptop running Win7 Pro, 32bit and my desktop runs Win7 Home Premium, 64bit.

My Facebook account will not run correctly on my desktop, it says that I am running IE8! One step at a time.:mad:

Being 2 versions behind. There are more security features with most any new browser released, regardless of brand. IE9 is only one step above IE8, though it is much better than the latter.

I recommend IE10 at the minimum, as there’s security risks with using older browsers to conduct transactions on. Security risks that not all security apps will cover. Plus, unlike FF & Chrome, there’s very little support as far as extensions goes. Of which both the latter, as well as Opera, has plenty of choices.

I wouldn’t say there are specific dangers, as long as Microsoft keeps updating it, which I don’t know how long they’ll keep doing it.

I think it’s safe to move to IE 10, it’s pretty stable, it’s more standards compliant than 9, so I would probably give it a try.

Phil, when I was running Windows 7 32-bit (a few months ago), I upgraded from IE9 to IE10. I immediately started having problems when I browsed. (It’s been a while, so I don’t recall exactly what the problems were.)

I then uninstalled IE10, which brought me back to IE9. The problems stopped after I did that.

It was easy to go from 10 back to 9, so it wouldn’t hurt if you tried 10; you can easily go back to 9 if there are issues.

I can’t speak about IE11, because I’ve never used it.

My point exactly. Why mess with something that is working well unless you are really exposing yourself to dangers. Unfortunately i dont know what standards compliant means.

It means that some sites will behave better or look better with a browser that understand and implement the standards on web technologies, like HTML and CSS, which are the technologies web pages are built with.

As I said before, the problem with 9 is that it may not be supported for that long. 9 is available only for Vista, and 7. Vista, I believe, is nearing its support cycle and once that ends, probably there will be no more patching. IE 10 is a faster, better browser, overall.

From my perspective, it is very easy to try IE 10 to see how it works for you. Every system is different. What works for one may not work for the next. Here’s what I would do:

Create a new Image.

Download and install IE 10 separately from WU.

See if it works for you by using it for a while.

If it does great, if not open CP Programs and Features. Click the link on the left View Installed Updates. Select IE 10 and uninstall. IE 9 will be re-enabled.

OR

Restore your Image.

By using this method you can safely try this later IE version to see if it’s right for you.

The link I supplied gives you the opportunity to download IE as an executable that you can save to your PC to run as you wish. WU (Windows Update) installs the selected updates immediately. Many prefer to install this larger updates by downloading the .exe rather than working through WU. YMMV.

I now use IE11 on all systems (3 win7, 3 win 8.1) and, for the most part it works. I’ve found that I have to use the Compatibility settings for several web pages (got rid of the ‘_exe’ problem that way). I’ve not noted many differences between it and IE10 but believe the MS hype that it’s more secure. The only website I continue to have problems with is the Verizon Wireless site – cannot log on to my account at all, URL flips and flips then closes tab. I use FireFox to go to websites I need that don’t play well with IE.

Thanks again to everyone a couple of more questions. I did as suggested backed up computer and created a repair disk before downloading i.e.10 first thing I did was checked my Banking all worked even the one that told me I needed to use Java which I continued with ignoring that message and it worked without it but I remember reading in this publication to get rid of Java which I did some time ago have I violated something in the article I read it said Java was a risk also I lost my spell checker I was using Speckie but I notice as I write this there is a spell checker working that I never saw before when I communicated on this forum but I have sent e mails before I wrote this and after i.e. 10 and had no spell checker. I have read that there is a spell checker that comes with i.e. 10 but you have to activate it which it said to open Internet Explorer and go to tools and check the box obviously either something was left out or I don’t understand is that in accessories I cant remember now where else I looked. thanks ahead of time

My IE 10 and now IE 11 spell checker was activated as soon as I installed or updated to the later browser. Give a try by intentionally miss-spelling a word. You should see a red underline on the miss-spelled word. Right click on the word and spelling suggestions will be shown.

Perhaps this was an option when setting up Win 8 and Win 8.1 originally, but I believe it was enabled by default as I did not enable it in my case. It was just there.

I’m running I.E. 11 on both Windows 7 and 8.1 and have no problems with either. I will agree with Clint that the security settings were a little over the top, but once set you should be ok. I haven’t had any sites that don’t play nice with 11, on Windows 7, but I am having an issue with my banking site on my Surface RT 8.1 in that the pop up keyboard blocks the input box of a security code that I need. BofA is looking into it though.

Ted and ruirib thanks for you replies ruirib that tutorial you sent was perfect and did the trick. Was I right about Java is it still something to stay away from also I remember that there was an advisory article that you should disable the screen gadgets is that still important and why does Secunia still tell me that i.e. 10 is still not safe for browsing just like it did with 9? Either one of you use Hotmail as I do and got switched to Outlook and know how to get rid of the blank part of the page on the side I have been able to get rid of the ads but not gain the page back. Hopefully after these questions I wont have to bother you guys anymore. Thanks.

Phil,

Java is still a security risk, it’s always being constantly patched. Whether you should remove it or not, it’s more up to you. If you use Secunia, it will tell you when it needs updating.
Some sites (although admittedly few these days), require Java. If you have one of those, you can still install Java and disable its use in your browsers, and then activate it just when you visit a site that needs Java.

I haven’t run Secunia in a long time, but the I remember the warning about IE. If it is still similar, it must be a flaw that Microsoft regards as unimportant and Secunia as important. I don’t like IE, and actually I like it less and less each time I need to compare it with Chrome or Firefox, so I confess I don’t really care about the security flaw, as i hardly use it.

I am not sure about what you mean on Outlook.com. Maybe show a screen capture?

I use Secunia because I don’t know about anything else for that sort of thing you got suggestions? Secunia is fine to make sure you have the latest version apps. There are alternatives, but Secunia works fine, IMO, I have just been slacking on that front.

To capture the screen, you can use a nifty Windows 7 native utility, the Snipping tool. Just click the start button, type snip and the top result will be the snipping tool. Open it and you can draw a rectangle with your mouse and everything within the rectangle will be copied. Once you do it, the app will show you what you have captured and allow you to save it -> File Save. You can then upload it here.

If you have blocked the ads, I fear you won’t be able to get rid of the area. This is a free service, so it’s natural for Microsoft to try and make money with the ads. There are paid Outlook.com accounts and those are ad-free.

Yes that is exactly what I was referring to the space on the right and personally I would rather have it blank than with the Ads.. From what I understand you can pay like $20.00 a year to get an account that is ad free I just thought that with all the stuff you know I figured you might know something else about a way around it. IMO means In My Opinion (there are other common variants – IMHO, In My Humble Opinion, IMVHO, etc.).

Outlook.com is a web app, which means you don’t have that much control over what it shows, unless you target it very specifically with code to change what it displays and how it is displayed. Removing ads is a generic task, common to many websites, so ad blocking can tackle the problem in a generic way that will work for many websites.
I confess I don’t remove ads. Most places I go don’t use them in annoying ways and although we have come to love free, nothing is really free, so I understand that especially those that offer free services, often need to get paid in other ways. Everybody needs to make a living.

I use Trend Micro for antivirus/malware protection. I am very pleased with it, both from an effectiveness standpoint and that there is no noticeable slowdown when it is running. And it is very highly rated by the computer magazines. However, it is about $50 per year for up to three computers.

If you don’t want to pay, then I recommend Avast. The only problem with Avast is that you have to manually update it on a regular basis; the free version doesn’t include that feature. But I’m guessing that if you knew how, you could probably set it up to auto update via the Windows Task Scheduler.

And as others have said, use common sense when you’re surfing the web.

I use AVG AV 2014 Pro, but the free version is quite good. Just a few less features. I also use Malwarebytes Anti-malware Pro, which gives me the advantage of running AVG and Malwarebytes both in real time (running continuously) Malwarebytes plays well with most AV/AM apps. I used MSE (WD in Win 8) for quite some time and had good luck with it as well. I switched to AVG because I received an offer for 3 licenses with a mail in rebate that made it free. I use 2 licenses on Mine and my Wife’s PCs, and the 3rd license on my smart phone. Her smartphone has the free version. Unfortunately this deal is not available any more. I believe it originally came from Newegg. If you do a search you might find it a little less expensive although it’s not terribly expensive any way.

In answer to someone’s question a few pages back, all Internet Explorer (IE) versions from the original one that came with the operating system are supported by Microsoft, i.e. have critical (security) updates provided for them, until that OS is no longer supported by Microsoft.

Microsoft state this opaquely as “Releases known as Components follow the Support Lifecycle of their parent Major Product”. FYI the full Product Lifecycle listing is available here.

I can verify the ‘original browser’ thing personally as I still have IE6 installed on an old XP system, and receive critical updates for it. (I don’t use it to go online, but have a favorite XP program which doesn’t work with newer versions of IE.)

A number of months ago some major websites started displaying warning and even error messages when IE6 was used, and I don’t think for instance Youtube works at all any more with such an old browser. So some websites by design, rather than Microsoft, would generally be the limiting factor on how long an old IE version could be used. Plus some pages don’t display fully or properly on very old browsers.

IE9 is the newest version installed on the Windows 7 systems I support. Newer versions have more security features which about invariably require more effort to learn and maintain. I’ve trained the family member whose computers I support well, so she very rarely visits suspect websites. In newer versions of IE the added new types of security alerts would just be confusing to her, she would not learn how to use them and would be incapable of maintaining the exception lists required to use some of them properly.

I mainly use Firefox myself, only using IE when a webpage doesn’t work properly on FF (which is rare).

Slightly off topic, but try one of the PDF viewers (not Adobe Reader). I use PDF-Xchange Editor. It works in IE and FF, probably in Chrome as well. You can set it up to either open in the browser or in the app directly.

I keep 4 images of each of my main PCs, 2 in each of my 2 external drives. I also keep an original image of my laptop, in case I need to reset it to factory settings. Just playing safe.

Didn’t realize it until doing a check today, all of my Windows 7 installs (3) has IE11. Though I primarily use FF & Chrome, I did use this opportunity to test IE11 out, on all installs, it’s as usable as IE9/10 was. Though Windows 7 shipped with IE8, I had never liked & avoided using that browser, it was so heavy, also poorly designed as far as actual browser space goes (too many toolbars by default).

bigbadsteve, have been working on rebuilding XP Mode on one of my notebooks today, starting Windows Update from IE6 got me nowhere, even with automatic updates selected. Had to manually download/install IE8 to get going & still had to fight the svchost.exe issue (99% CPU usage). I believe MS is in full throttle mode to discourage XP usage in every way possible, as I’ve clean installed 2 other XP machines (one of my own), the same issue with those. For years, this was a non-issue for me, until just 2-3 months ago.

Anyway, IE11 is worth trying out, if not running properly or as desired, uninstall & the previously installed IE will be reverted back.

I usually have 4 or 5 Images for both our PCs. Generally I will keep making new Images monthly, then when I get too many I will just eliminate the oldest Images. I also have my Win 7 final Image for each, and my Win 8 final Image for each. I put these in a separate subfolder labeled Win 7 final and Win 8 final (so original, I know). So I have folders for 3 PCs, mine, my wife’s and my granddaughters original Image. I also keep both our File History backups in folders in the Ext. HD. These are all on a 1 Tb Ext HD and I still have almost half of the drive available.

My Imaging needs are not nearly as critical as some others so I find a monthly Image is fine. My first Image with a new OS includes both the C Drive and Data Drive. Subsequent Images generally only include the C Drive.

Thanks for that info am I the only one that doesn’t know this stuff? Very good idea to put on an external I will do so. I have been doing 2 Backups a month one on the
2nd of the month because for me here we are 15 hrs. ahead of the States at this time of year in case something comes out on the 1st and one on the 2nd Wednesday of the Month for Patch Tuesday for the same reason and I know I don’t deal with the stuff you guys do so I think I will just do one on the Wednesday except when I do something major like download i.e. 10. A couple more things on Backups. When you have it automatically scheduled does it create an Image and backup of files and when you manually press on create an Image the one in the left box does it do Image and files and on the right hand side when you use Backup now does it do both? Rui thanks for the link on the attachment I haven’t read it yet so don’t know if I will understand it but I will hope so and on my computer what file do I download the image to? Thank you both very much again. One question I forgot to ask is wen you are deleting Backups do you ever get to the point where to reformat the disk?

I don’t schedule my backups, Phil, I do it manually all the time. What app will you be using or are you using to image?

The type of backup so many of us recommend is called an image because it behaves as if it took a snapshot of your disk. This snapshot is then stored, preferably in an external and can be used to restore the disk to the precise state it was at the moment the snapshot was taken.

Being a complete image of your disk, such a backup has everything. Windows system files, your files and documents, everything.

I delete images manually, as well. An image is simply a file, with an extension, in my case a .tib extension, since I use Acronis True Image to create my extensions. There is no need to reformat the external disk. I don’t think I ever formatted any of my external disks.

I didn’t understand that question about what file do you download the image to. Is this related to posting images here? Please explain.

As always thank you for you response. I do the one Backup to have for before I download the updates for patch Tuesday in case anything goes wrong I have learned that from you guys. In regards to what app I use and I am not sure I am answering correctly I use Windows Backup in conjunction with Acronis. My question was are all the methods offered in Windows Back up the same such as Backup now, create a system image and a scheduled backup do they all do an image and the rest of the things? In regards to formatting the disk I was referring to the one in the computer because what I do is after I have a couple on the computer and several on Acronis I was wondering when you are going to delete some I get rid of the ones on the hard drive first and reformat the disk yes or no and then keep the most recent on Acronis and start fresh on the computer hard drive. In regards to the question of file download I was referring to using the snipping tool. where is the file on my computer I download the image made from it to upload to the Forum with the attachment of the file? Unfortunately you always have to keep in mind you are dealing with a novice or someone who knows nothing about this stuff.

I never use Windows Backup. However, I know it can allow you to backup everything you have in your Libraries (basically the stuff you have in your Documents, Pictures, Music,etc) and it can also allow you to create a system image. Now, what it actually does, depends on how you configured it, so I really can’t say. Can you provide info on how you use it?

Where to you stored the stuff you backup with Windows Backup and where do you store the stuff you backup using Acronis?

Regarding the snipping tool, after you capture something, you can simply save it on your disk. When you do this, it’s like any other Windows program, you just define the name you want to give it. Usually the app names it Capture.jpg, which is acceptable if you don’t want to lose any more time choosing a name. I usually delete these files, once I have uploaded them.

You got me laughing again at least you keep me in a good humorous mood. I have heard people say that installing Windows is formatting to me it is an installation and I can barely do that. I don’t know how to format anything however the Backup was set up on installation it what it is I wouldn’t begin to know how to change it. My computer is used mostly for e mails and making mp3s for music which I make and then get rid of the music, no business, no pictures no nothing. I don’t store anything I don’t really have anything to save. I probably am making even more mistakes that I don’t realize but what can I say. You I am sure that I have told you this stuff I am sure you know more than I do about how the backup is formatted. I have to say though your replies are always interesting and informative.

To check what Backup is doing, you can open the Control Panel and choose Backup and Restore (so, Start Button->Control Panel->Backup and Restore).

Let me see if I can save you some time here and if I have guessed right. Are you trying to get me to do my Backups using Acronis and completely going around windows Backup? Today for me here in S.E. Asia it is Wednesday in the States it is Patch Tuesday in the States so I did my defrag and clean up as best I know how and did my updates and then did a Backup as I just said now if I download that backup and others I have to an external Hard Drive am I now doing Backups like you and Ted do or have I guessed wrong? If I am right can I now reformat that Drive just for drills and proper upkeep since I wont be using it?

If something bad happens just prior to my new Image, the present Image is less than a month old.

I’m your typical non-geek user. Medico’s comments above contains the only thing I’ve ever totally disagreed with him. He recommends taking an image After applying patches. He’ll disagree with me, but that makes no sense to me.

I take an image BEFORE applying any patches (or making any other changes to my system (installing a program, etc.)

If I ever have a problem, my image is only 1 day old at most, not a month.

I’ll put on my hard hat, and wait for incoming . . .

Dick, no incoming at all. I just feel that my PC does not change a lot during that month. My data is separate and backed up separately. If I were to make my Image before the updates, then say a week later things crashed, I would have to restore the PC, then install the updates once again. Since there have been no changes since my last Image a month ago (remember I also said if I make changes I do another intermediary Image) it is quicker for me if my Image contains the updates. Then I do not have to redo the updates after restoration.

So, let’s get things back in perspective. Are you just using Windows backup for backups or are you using Acronis too? What are your goals regarding backups:

There are advantages and disadvantages to both, Phil, we just make some choices about what we want to value.

I began to use Acronis well before Windows offered anything similar. Acronis always worked well for me so I keep using it. I started with Acronis TI 8.0, the last version of which was released in August 2005. Since it has served me well and the native Windows app doesn’t seem to be better, I have kept using Acronis.

Probably, the Windows app can be used with as much success as Acronis, but as long as Acronis doesn’t get bad or too expensive, I will keep using it. I have skipped a few versions, though.

As you already have licenses, I see no reason for you not to use it. It’s a little more flexible than the Windows native app.

Now, why are you talking about reformatting the drive using Acronis?

Phil, I did post Step by Step Instructions for Acronis a while back. These instructions were for first V2010, then 2011, but most are still appropriate for v2013 and I suspect for v2014.

Are you kidding I always need help. I have 3 Disk & partition back ups on Acronis made over the last 6 weeks I have the CD I made when I went from 32 Bit to 64 Bit 6 months ago or when ever it was both before and after I didn’t dig it out to check the date and the CD from before I went to i.e.10 and after I went to i.e.10 you guys tell me? I am running Acronis 2013 so Ted I will definitely look up your posts if either one of you have ideas or advice I am more than willing to listen and learn. Next I am going to try and learn this snipping tool thing Rui brought up it looks pretty slick. I missed a deal on Amazon for a Family Pack for AVG AV 2014 PRO for $50.00 that was good for 2 years is that pretty normal in so far as the year part goes? I think I will wait on that and Malware-Bytes Pro or something like it until after the Holidays to see what kind of deals are out there. Once again I will be thankful for any input you guys have. I can recommend it, it’s the one I use, it’s a top notch app that actually detected malware like the recently infamous CryptoLocker out of the box. I am running it on my 4 computers and my company bought it, as well. Not only it is great, but the price is very good too.

Phil, I highly recommend AVG AV 2014 Pro. Newegg has a 3 license pack for $39.99 USD. I do not use the Security Suite from AVG, just the AV product. This is a highly rated product that I have used for quite some time. AVG AV 2014 also has a free product with the same AV engine, but fewer features.

Ok, Phil, re Acronis. If anything goes bad, just post as you usually do, but things should go well, hopefully.

If you have a copy of Acronis TI that works for a given operating system, there is really no compelling reason to upgrade, unless a new version brings a new, valuable feature. I upgrade from 2010 to 2013 as 2013 had Windows 8 support. I ended up upgrading to 2014 because I got an excellent opportunity to go with the Premium version, for 3 licenses, for just around $20 (16 euros). I had the regular version before, and this was too good a deal to let it “escape”.

Phil, AVG and Emsisoft Antimalware are apps of the same type, so you would use one or the other, but not both.

Personally, I think EAM (Emsisoft Antimalware) is the better one. AVG is a good app, too. One aspect, among others, that, in my opinion, make EAM the better app, is the fact that contrary to what happens with most apps, EAM can run, at the same time, with some other AV apps, like MSE. This doesn’t happen often.

EAM, for a few months now, includes detection of Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs). Just a few days ago, someone at the Lounge said no AVs protected against PUPs. That member was wrong, because EAM includes protection against PUPs since last August but, again, not many AVs protect against that.

So, in my opinion, EAM is, security wise, a bit ahead of most competing apps. Plus, it often is ranked on top of comparative analysis of AV and anti-malware apps. That’s why I chose it to be one of my real time security apps.

So you have a very good AV for usually a better price than competing offers (with the current offer, at least $10 less). It’s really a no brainer, for me.

Yes, you could. You would have to do something to make sure one wouldn’t interfere with the other – exclude EAM from MSE scanning and exclude MSE from EAM scanning, but i can explain how that is done, if you want to (in a different, specific topic, if we come to that).

To be sure, you don’t need to run both, but it is possible. EAM is very light on resources, so having it running doesn’t tax your computer very much.

Wow, that’s an even better price. This is a digital download and then you just install it. You can have a physical package, but you don’t need that, you can simply download it.
EAM is available in multiple languages, yes and that includes English.

Make sure that price is for 3 licenses, even outside the EU.

If you buy it, I would then advise that you register your license. Like that it will be maintained at Emsisoft’s License Center and you can always access it and use it very easily.

Yes, Phil, you download it from the internet, but they include the option to send you a CD. Not sure how much they’ll charge you to send it to Thailand, though.

You realize there is really no difference in downloading it? You just get the program into the Downloads folder, or any other folder you prefer and when you are ready to install it, just click the file. The difference to doing it from the CD is minimal. It’s much faster, doesn’t affect your ownership in anyway, because you can redownload it at any time you wish, even without a license. If you prefer the CD that is fine, but I would encourage you to download it, unless you have a slow line – the download is 218 MB.

There is no inbox to go to, really. You click a link and your browser asks you to download the file. You chose the folder to save it, then you then just click to run the file. It can’t be simpler. You can even download it without buying it (since you can run it in trial mode for 30 days).

Yes, MBAM Pro can run with other AV programs, and it can run together with EAM too.

Phil, I don’t mind explaining anything. Usually, when you run two live AV programs, you need to make sure they don’t interfere with each other. All security apps I know include a mechanism to make sure some apps are exempt from being scanned, for whatever reason. It’s really a small effort, but it’s worth it, since it means you get to have more one than one real time app monitoring your system, thus increasing the probability of any malware, virus, etc, being caught.

My advice about EAM has one reason only: my belief that is one of the very best in the market. I use it and I recommend it. I recommend it not because I use it and had no problems with it, but because the set of features and the recurrent comparatives results, make me believe it’s one of the best apps you can use for AV protection. The day it stops being so, I will stop using it. I have no affiliation with Emsisoft and I gain nothing from advising it. It’s that simple.

Now, about the mutual exclusion thing. Having AVs exclude programs from their scanning is something all AVs support. Malwarebytes FAQ includes an extensive section that show how you exclude it from being scanned by AVs, which includes multiple AVs and MSE and AVG are there. Probably excluding Malwarebytes from any AV that you may be running is a good recommendation, so much so that it is present in Malwarebytes FAQ: https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=10138&page=1#entry167851

In a perfect world, you wouldn’t need AVs, but this is not a perfect world. AVs are complex apps and all they require some configuration effort, especially when you want to run more than one at the same time – even apps from the same manufacturer.

Now, as I said, which ones each Lounge member uses its their own choice and that is perfect. I am in now way offended by choices different from mine. As an acquaintance of mine used to say, taking advice from others should be treated like a buffet – you have a lot of options and you choose the ones your prefer, for whatever reason. That’s just how things are and that’s exactly how they should be.

I see my role here, in the areas of my experience, as doing my best to make users have the tools to make informed decisions. Regarding any app I recommend, you won’t see me recommending it because I use it, even though I will recommend it if I use it – I will recommend anything based on its technical merits or its technical merits and price and I will state what the merits are. The criteria for a recommendation here are even more stringent than if I had to do a personal choice, because I can afford to make a bad choice for my computers, but I am extremely careful with someone else’s computers. I wouldn’t want my advice to put anyone at risk, for whatever reason.

To conclude my intervention on this specific AV issue, if you go to the AVG forum you will find people who had AVG running and yet were infected by CryptoLocker. What this tells me is that, although a good app, AVG wouldn’t protect you, out of the box, against CryptoLocker. EAM would detect it, through its behavioral detection engine and let you know a given app was behaving strangely and ask you to make a decision. Which do you think is the best behavior? With viruses and malware, the most acute problem is actually to get protection against unknown threats (like Crypto was when it came out). From my analysis of repeated tests in the wild, EAM is quite effective doing this.

A choice about malware protection should include detection capabilities, price, load on your system. I wouldn’t possible see myself buying something that is both more expensive and performs usually worse. As said many times here, no app provides full protection, but some apps provide better protection than others. If I am to spend money (and I want to spend money on security apps), I want to buy the best that I can buy.

The forum just maintains a list of what each user has read or not. When you open the browser in a give topic, it knows it’s you and marks it as read.

Obviously I can identify with that that’s why I live in Thailand. Okay here is what I have so far Emsisoft Anti-Malware 8.1 3 copies $19.97 shipping $9.95 total $29.92 that’s one year license 3 year license $83.97 Shipping the same total $93.92 I have put in my mailing details to Thailand and all no price change don’t not know if it will when I put in my card. What do you think is it the right Product and any other thoughts?

I wouldn’t buy the 3 years extension right now. Buy just one year, you will still be able to renew cheap, no worries. They give increased discounts when renewing, considering the time you have had a license.

I think the price will be just like that, it needs to be, it can’t increase just when the card is charged. Also, I never had it shipped, I always just download and install.

Well your about like me 6 hrs. of sleep and up again. Well I got Emsisoft and it was $29.92 U.S. for 3 of them and I went online and downloaded it and registered it and it is up and running I did a deep scan on the trial run and another one after I activated it. I turned down the Language Package, the beta downloads and the multiple downloads and changed the number from 5 to 1. I activated everything that there was I did not create a schedule I will take care of it myself. I know I must have missed something in my reporting but now you can tell me what mistakes I made. I never got any signs of any incompatibility. What do I do now uninstall Malware-bytes? You have a way of spreading confidence congratulations.

Well done, Phil, seems you have it all running fairly well. Personally I don’t enable the surf protection as I don’t really need an app to tell me which links are safe or not, but you can run with it activated and see what you think, if you prefer.

There is one thing you need to be aware. EAM will ask for your input, when an app behaves in a way that may constitute a threat – this will be the result of the behavioral analysis module. This will happen with mostly unknown apps, but it can happen with known ones too. You should always look to see what it says about the app. If you are installing something at the very moment the the input is requested, it’s likely that you can respond affirmatively, as it will be the installation of the software that prompts it. If you are not sure, don’t be afraid to come here and ask.

This said, it won’t happen many times, but it may happen a few times. Just don’t answer automatically – have a look before you take a decision.

Phil, Malwarebytes Pro (MBAM Pro) is an excellent app. I recommend you keep it as another of your defense layers. Just follow the steps in my previous post to make sure that it won’t cause excessive CPU use when it is scanning your computer.

Ok, now making sure EAM and MBAM run nicely side to side (if you don’t do it, CPU usage can get a bit high when MBAM is scanning files).

1. Right click the EAM icon at the bottom right in your taskbar and choose Application Rules. You will get something like this:

Click the Add New Rule button. You will get a dialog like this:

Now click the small button with the 3 dots and the top and browse to c:Program Files(x86)Malwarebytes Anti-malware folder and then select mbam.exe. The dialog will look like this:

For security mode, choose Always allow this application. Press OK and you’re done. You can close the dialog in 1, which will show a new line with the exclusion you just added.

That’s it. Now EAM and MBAM will run alongside each other fine.

I would advise you to keep it, Phil, MBAM is an excellent app and can catch anything EAM misses (it’s always possible, no app will catch everything).

The free is ok too, Phil, I thought you have had the Pro one. There is no need to buy the Pro, then, just run the free one, even if that one won’t provide live protection.

CPU stands for Central Processing Unit, is the one of the central components of a computer. It is the CPU that does most of the work related to getting tasks done in a computer. It basically runs the show, to put it in a simple way. If MBAM is not excluded from withing EAM, it’s possible that the CPU is used in full, slowing down all the rest of the stuff you can do, while it is being used in full.

Good day to you. I have been doing my morning maintenance on my desk top. before I got hold of you. Thank you for the nice concise explanation of CPU I kind of knew that but wasn’t real sure and wasn’t aware of the speed part kind of. I can get Malware-bytes Pro from them Family Pack 3 copies and shipping for about $65.00 I like that live protection and if I am doing this there is no sense going halfway might as well do it all the way and as good as we can. What about MSE are we just going to run with that its okay by me its up to you whether it passes the safe test? Time for shower and stuff will get your answer when I get done. By the way the computer I have been doing the modifications on is a fairly new HP laptop that I boosted up to 8 gig of Ram running w7 64 Bit just like my Desktop I figured if I was going to make a big time error to do it on that one also it doesn’t have as much stuff on it so I could also see what kind of time I was dealing with in regards to doing all these modifications and not lose the service of my Desk top if something goes belly up. If you run EAM + MBAM Pro, you will be doing fine. I don’t think you will gain much by adding MSE, so I would advise not to add it.

If you want to go ahead anyway, you’d need to exclude it in the same way I showed you could exclude MBAM. You should then exclude EAM in MSE, which is a similar process.

So what you are saying is when I get MBAM Pro take out MSE? Is there any reason to uninstall it first before I put in MBAM Pro no right or I wouldn’t have to configure it after the installation right? How do I get those instruction boxes that you sent for the configuration of EMS to be a bit bigger I can barely read them? You should be teaching an on line Computer Science class for some University. Let me see what kind of action I can get from MBAM probably just like EMS right download online get CD later huh?

Yes I have Emsisoft & MSE on that other computer that’s what I was referring to when I said I had no warnings when doing the Emsisoft installation. As I said I ran two Deep Scans with Emsisoft I have not tried to run MSE since the new installation should I get out that computer and try it? I should probably try and do do your configuration first right? I am sorry disregard what I said I forgot you advised me to take out MSE.

EAM can run alongside MSE, you will probably just get a bit of CPU usage.

You can exclude MSE from EAM. You should exclude 3 files:

C:Program FilesMicrosoft Security ClientAntimalwareMsMpEng.exe
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Security ClientAntimalwareNisSrv.exe
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Security Clientmsseces.exe

To exclude EAM in MSE, I am at a disadvantage as I am not running MSE, so I cannot provide direct guidance, but I will look into it.

I was curious so I looked and I started this thread on th 28th of Nov about going from i.e. 9 to i.e. 10 we sure have come a long way in 16 days. Open Program files in 3 dot box but there is no c:Program Files(86) there is a Program Files(x86) but it doesn’t have a mbam.exe and even if it did I wouldn’t know how to get into that header on the left of the 3 dot box. You need to look for Program Files (x86)Malwarebytes Anti-Malwarembam.exe. If you click the three dots button and browse to this file, you just need to click the file and the whole thing will be copied to the proper place, Phil.

I’ve had problems with IE 11 on two machines, Win 7 & Win 8. (Posted on the IE pages). On the Win 8 machine it got to the point where it wouldn’t run for more than a few seconds, so I switched to Firefox 26. End of problems.
