Greetings. Is there a trick to installing a new version of a program (like iTunes) that uses a service without uninstalling it first? I don’t remember this behavior in Windows XP but at least a couple of programs on my Windows 7 Pro machine (iTunes and WD SmartDrive) are “self-updating” and will propose to update themselves. The problem is they both use services and if I try to update them without uninstalling them first the update fails because the service can’t be uninstalled without a reboot. So, I uninstall, reboot, and then can install the updated program.

Is there a trick to making this work like it did in Windows XP (reinstalling the application on top of itself without an intervening uninstall)?

    Thanks.

    Rob

If the program must update a service then a reboot may be required. If the service can be stopped it can be un-installed, replaced and re-installed without a re-boot, but this assumes the programmers bothered to test instead of going the fail safe route.

      cheers, Paul
