Relationships between tables

OK, prepare yourself, this could take a while…

This is my problem, I am trying to set up a table. What I want is when I input information in a field, it looks up that information in another table and updates another field in the same table that I am working on. Another problem that I am facing is that the field that I want to update is stuck on number, and when I try to change it to text, it tells me that I cannot change it because is has one or more relationships and that I must delete the relationships before I can change that field. When I go to the relationship window, there is nothing there to delete. Can someone please help me?

You didn’t say which version you were using, but it should be much the same in both. Go to the relationships layout. Add your table to the layout. Either click the ShowAll or ShowDirect button or select the item from the relationships menu. Now you should see any relationships involved and you can delete the relationship if necessary. Be aware, though, that you must select the relationship itself and delete that, not just take the table off the layout.

I looked at the relationship layout and it brought up the of the tables, but from what I could tell, there were no relationship between the two of them. There was no line between the two tables. Am I looking in the right spot?

Jennifer, you could have a query that has a relationship between the two tables. I think I have had this problem before. I don’t think the query relationship shows up under the Relationship dialog.

I thought that could be it too, so I deleted all the queries that were there. (they were to old tables that didn’t exist anymore anyway).

I’d do a repair/compact at this point and see if that doesn’t clear it up. You may have to create a new blank database and import your tables and start fresh.
