Windows 98 has been asking for the operating disk when I attempt to do different tasks (no particular rhyme or reason to what the tasks are) and I am not sure why question I ran the ‘system file checker’ and I did repair a couple of files but that didn’t help. So rather then keep trying to guess what the problem might be, I am wondering if it would be wise just to reload Windows directly over Windows and is this something that can be done without causing more troubles or bothering the existing data files question It seems to me that it can be done but I just wanted to verify my thinking on this!
    thankyou

Thanks Cowboy! I am glad you are riding the range and watching out for us “little people”! Maybe they should make a smiley with a white hat on a tiny horse just for you!! This version of 98 doesn’t have a restore point with it….just plain ole Win 98. But I will give it a go,probably tomorrow, and see what happens!!
      thankyou

What Cowboy is referring to is a feature of Windows 98 that came before the days of System Restore – the System Registry Checker. Windows 98 keeps, by default, six copies of your system’s registry which can be used to roll the system back to a previous state. Since it doesn’t include key system files, it doesn’t always work as well as one would like – but it’s usually a good way to fix problems. Just remember that a new copy of the registry is backed up on each successful boot, so if you have rebooted more than six times since the weirdness started….you won’t have a previous “good” copy.

Just to report back……I have to admit that I restarted by system more then a system restore of the registry would help sad. So reloading windows over windows was the “repair” that I made and it seems to have corrected my “troubles” thus far! smile
          thankyou for the help!

hello Hi Skitterbug, can I ask how you reinstalled 98 over the top of 98? Have not had to do that so far, but interested in case I have a problem that requires me to do this. Thank you.

Cyber, I’m not Skitterbug but it’s relatively easy to do. You can just run the setup program on the Windows 98 CD-ROM and it will run the installation process, verifying and updating files as needed.

Hi: I agree with Mark’s message but you do have to choose to install it into the original Windows directory to accomplish the re-copying of the files that need to be repaired or re-installed due to accidental deletion or corruption. yep It seems to do a more thorough process then the “system file checker” in “accessories” although I did do that first since it wasn’t so drastic a process.

Doing this didn’t hurt any of my files but as usual, the advise to back up information that you want to be sure remains intact, is always a good thing to do before proceeding with any major process. smile

              Hope this helps! smile
