• Reminder problem (Outlook 2003)

Long history but I think it is necessary. I had a previous version of Office installed. I use Outlook for everything but e-mail. I have reminders that come up regularly during the day, both repeating reminders and one time reminders. Everything had been fine until one day I got a message that some Mappoint (2004) add-in was causing a problem. From then on, I have been unable to dismiss SOME reminders and snooze others. Sometimes “Dismiss all” works and sometimes it doesn’t . When I try to do this, it hangs and gives me a “Not Responding” message. At this time when I go to close Outlook it doesn’t close for a while and gives me the send error report message.

I first removed Mappoint which I still have not reinstalled. I still had the problem. I then used Repair and Detect. I still had the problem. I then removed Office and reinstalled it. I still had the problem. Since I just got a new machine for another part of the house, I decided to use the new Office (2003) on this machine and the old one on the new machine. So I uninstalled the old Office and closed down. I then installed Office 2003 knowing that my problem was solved. WRONG! Same thing happens. I assume that this, then, must be a registry problem. When I go to task manager, under Applications it looks like there are 2 instances of Outlook running, although in processes there is only one instance.

And, BTW, the only way I can get Outlook to give me the reminders to then mess me up shootfoot is to reboot. Once I have successfully closed Outlook after the reminders have hung, and then reopened it, no more reminders come up and I can not close it without using task manager. This is very frustrating as I really depend upon my reminders as my senior moments are so bad that I sometimes don’t even remember I am having them. I am at a loss. hairout Can anyone help?

This is an unusual and ugly problem, and I don’t have a silver bullet solution, but there are few steps I would try, after some preliminary work.

(Note, from your explanation it appears that you on a standalone machine, not on Exchange Server, and that eliminates some possible issues and solutions. Correct me if I guessed wrong.)

Are you sure that you are running two copies of Outlook? If you enter the Task Manager are there two Outlook Applications running in the Applications tab? In the Processes tab, Outlook may show as more than one process, ignore that. Are you using any PDA synchroniztion software? Have you checked your Startup folder for duplicate entries?

Have you run scanpst.exe (the ‘inbox repair tool’) on your PST? It’s always a good idea to try that, but it doesn’t necessarily clean out any corrupt items.

After you try these steps, if they don’t help we can get into the tedious work.

Thanks for your reply, John. Yes, Outlook is being used on a standalone machine and only for Calendar, no emails. When Outlook hangs, the second instance will appear in the Application Tab, but only one process in Processes Tab. There is no PDA sync software installed. We’ll try to run Inbox repair tool and see if it can fix a problem.

        Thanks again.

I can not find the inbox repair tool. I looked all over, tried putting the name in Start->Run and then did a search of my machine for it. I can not find it. Where would this be located?
          Thanks,

The actual file name of the executable is ‘scanpst.exe’ – in my 2003 corporate installation it’s located in:

            C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMSMAPI1033

Make sure you set your search to look in hidden folders and files. If you don’t find it , dig it up your installation disks and install it – it’s useful to have. If you have to get out your installation disks, also install ‘scanost.exe’ in case you need it at some future time.

Sorry for the delay. I do dog rescue and was gone all weekend transporting dogs all over the east coast. I just had to attach the picture of one of them as he is so cute and so happy to be rescued from the hell hole of a high kill shelter where he was.

I found the inbox repair tool and ran it. (Why I could not find it with a search is still beyond me but that is not important). It found much corruption and I asked it to fix the problem. (I had been regularly exporting my pst file to an external hard drive so I knew I had nothing to lose). After I ran it I did a cold reboot. When I reopened Outlook I tried to export the repaired file and the whole thing locked up on me. I sighed and closed it and rebooted. I quickly opened Outlook to get the info on a contact I needed for rescue (before the reminders would pop up) and then closed it out. Over the weekend I did at least 2 cold reboots but did not open Outlook either time.

As I was driving dogs all over yesterday I was thinking about this and I was planning on crying “help” help again today. But it seems it is not necessary. Last night, I had to open Outlook to get more contact information. Upon opening it asked me to choose a pst file (it had not done this before) and I clicked on Outlook pst. It was open long enough for reminders to pop up. I figured what the hay and tried to snooze and dismiss some of the more nasty ones – I knew the worst thing that would happen is that I had to close it in task manager.
Low and behold, they dismissed and snoozed like they are supposed to. clapping I was in a bit of shock and figured that maybe just maybe… but refused to hope that it would happen again. This morning I reopened Outlook (without rebooting) and my reminders popped up. I once again snoozed a formerly nasty one and it worked again.

John, you are my hero. Now, if you could only do something about the idiot dog person I know, who just moved to New Orleans last month, and who decided to ride Katrina out with his 5 dogs (3 which he adopted from us and 2 which he is fostering) well, I would be a happy camper. I only hope I do not have to delete his contact from Outlook. sad

Glad to hear the problem is solved (for now crossfingers). My last suggestion is that since old Calendar items have limited value, you might consider archiving them – that removes any old items that might be corrupted, and can help Outlook stability as well as keep the PST size down.

Hope those puppies are safe in The Big Easy. Here’s a US website many doglovers enjoy: http://www.inthecompanyofdogs.com[/url%5D, in case you haven’t run into it. The Bride reads their catalog over and over. smile
