I set up Windows 2000 some months ago as dual boot with Win98 on C: and Win2k on D:…the idea was to keep win98 alive until there were updates for all my hardware and software. After six months of waiting all my hardware and software drivers have been updated and are working on Win2k. Now I want to delete Win98 and boot straight from Win2k. I have Partition magic 6.0 and my thought was to just delete the C: partition (which includes the boot loader) and reboot. Presumably this will change the D: drive to C: and boot into Win2k. Can anybody see any problem that might arise?

Go to http://www.pcnineoneone.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi%5B/url%5D and ask your question there. There are a lot of people that dual boot over at PC911. I am dual booting but I want to keep both. I think you will be running into all kinds of problems. All of my software is NOT compatable. Are you sure that ALL of yours is?

I use Partition Magic 6 also, but there is an another way that is less “final”. Simply edit the C:Boot.ini file using the Windows 2000 Notepad program. Unlike the Windows 98 version, it allows you to edit and save files like Boot.ini, which has read-only, hidden, and system attributes.

I have numerous partitions, and a removable hard drive. Instead of seeing EVERY available boot partition, you can edit the list to include ONLY the ones you want to select from.

This is just a problem waiting to happoen. If you delete C: you won’t be able to boot, and you can’t (i think) transfer the system files for 2k like you can with 98. Your best bet is to document EVERYTHING, backup, repartition the entire drive and re install. Sorry, i know it wasn’t the answer you were looking for but its the safest.
