I added a worksheet and tried to rename it to “Breakdown”. Whe I hit enter, the name changed to “.xls]Breakdown” and the name change was accepted. Now when I try to rename it it gives the message to the effect of I have not entered a valid name.

    Strange…..

    Thanks, Simon

What method are you using to change the name. Are you enetering a new name on the worksheet tab, or are you using VBA ?

Entering the name onto the worksheet tab.

Does it reject all names, or just a specific name. Try changing the new name slighly and see if that helps

It rejects all names. The file is on the network so I tried it on another machine – same. I have tried a single letter, double letter. The only way out is to hit escape. I have left it with the default “sheet 3” for now .

Could you create a copy of the file (minus any data of course) and if the problem persists post to the forum, and somebody might find a cause. Seems strange, I assume there is no form of protection involved.

I will create a copy tomorrow, strip out all the other worksheets and if it still has the problem I will post it.

              Thanks, Simon

Try inserting a new sheet, copy everything from the problem sheet, past it to the new sheet, then try deleting the problem sheet.
