renaming files in DOS mode

Here’s one you may not have experienced yet.

My son saved to disk what he thought was a joke email….turned out was the dreaded Snow White worm.

MacAfee caught it and turfed it out..I thought, but it seems a windows system file is corrupted.

Since it is a windows file it can’t be changed or deleteed while in windows, so I went into DOS mode.

Well it would appear the virus causes the back slash to type french letter a (but only in DOS…OK in windows)…instead of a slash…so no go there.

Tried running DOS from start up disk…nope.

I’m out of ideas….oh yeah, extracted the file and over saved…no go.

Am i now reduced to uninstalling/reinstalling windows?….or reformatting disk…Fdisk option???

yikes…..any suggestions.

Whilst in Windows, open Notepad and type in a line that will delete the offending file (e.g. del C:WindowsSystemwsock32.dll)
Save the file as del.bat to the root of your boot drive. Drop out of Windows into DOS. Type ‘Call del.bat’ (without the quotes). This should get rid of the corrupted Wsock32.dll. Next you have to replace it. Whilst in Windows type extract [path name to Win CD cab containing Wsock32.dll] [path name of where you want it put]. This should get an uncorrupted version back on to your HD. Either that or on booting Windows will ask you to put in your CD and do it for you automatically – it depends on which Windows you’re using. Probably.

Prob still exists that when I drop into DOS the C prompt wants a path….just typing doesn’t work.

Now I saved the notepad edit line just into “C” using “save as”…that;s ok I presume.

Is there a way to get the call del.bat command to work without the DOS calling for a path?

leave off the call and just type
del.bat at the command prompt
