• Repeat last command (F4) (Word Xp/97)

    Howdy,

I was recently upgraded to Word XP from Word 97. Over the years I’ve come to know and love “F4” (repeat last command on the default keyboard mapping). But, since I’ve gone to XP, I’ve noticed that F4 isn’t as reliable as it was before. For example, I just changed the font size for bunch of cells in a table (using the Font Size combo box). I scrolled down a page or so, selected a bunch of cells in a different table and hit F4…and the font size didn’t change.

I checked my “Undo” list, and (from what I can figure out) hitting F4 skipped Font Size Select and instead executed the command prior to Font Size Select.

I haven’t tested this with other commands, but in the past few weeks I’ve seen some other “unusual” (i.e. not what 97 used to do) behavior from using F4. So, my question is…bug? Or did MS just decide to change the behavior of something that worked perfectly for no good reason except they could?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

Lots of things are different, but I don’t understand how changing the font size could not be a re-doable action. Does Ctrl+Y work any better? More Windows apps seem to use Ctrl+Y for this functionality…

Word 2000 and 2002 each took away certain functions of the F4 command. It no longer works for several tasks in tables and no longer works for certain formatting changes made via the Formatting toolbar (specifically Font changes), but does work when changes are made via the Format menu. The problem is, all of the settings in the Format Font or Paragraph dialog box are copied along with F4 rather than the one thing you want to change.
