Replacing Live Mesh

I use Live Mesh to sync a file between several PCs in our household. Since the file is frequently updated and is about 3GB in size we do not want to automatically upload it to Skydrive or any other cloud storage facility.

Microsoft has decided to replace Live Mesh with the Skydrive client which does not support file sync between PCs without syncing to the cloud. I have just found out that Live Mesh is going away. Apparently, Microsoft is updating Live Essentials and will replace Live Mesh with the Skydrive client.

Does anybody know of some file sync software that will sync files on the LAN without syncing them to the cloud?

I will use Live Mesh for as long as I can. I hoping there is enough negative feedback on the Skydrive app so that they redo it properly. Not holding my breath, but anyway, I won’t put away with Live Mesh until I am forced to do so.

Give a look at RoboCopy and/orSyncToy. Both from Microsoft. Another option would be to get a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, host the file there then all would have access to the same file. More details about the computers you have DT/LT and file usage would make it easier to make specific recommendations. :cheers:

An update. I have found a candidate to replace Live Mesh. It is an open source project called FreeFileSync and is available on Sourceforge.net. It had positive reviews in LifeHacker, SourceForge and several other “Howto” sites.

I have installed it and so far so good. It is fairly intuitive to set up and is doing the job. One feature that I was looking for is a real time file change monitoring where changes are replicated across all of the machines. To do that first you set up a configuration that you then save to a FreeFileSync batch file. You then run a portion of FreeFileSync called RealTimeSync that monitor (runs like a Windows service) that monitors for changes. In addition it also works for my XP machine. Something that Live Mesh stopped doing about a year ago when MS went to the 2011 edition of Live Essentials.

When installing use the custom install and do not install the Snap.do toolbar. Sounds like its of dubious quality, is hard to get rid of and I don’t use these sorts of things anyway.

Does anyone else out there have experience with FreeFileSync?

SkyDrive users BEWARE.
I had it installed on both my pc’s. I added files from both pc’s. One day I down loaded a pdf I made using my Desktop pc, it could not be opened on either pc. (Transfered using a thumb drive.)
I downloaded the same file on my Laptop, it opened perfectly on both pc’s.
I use PDFXCview portable pdf reader on both pc’s same version.
