When I copy something into Word from the web, I often see that lines are ended with a “Shift-Enter” rather than a normal carriage return. How can I find the “Shift-Enter” character in Word usin gthe Edit-Replace menu so that I can do a replace all with a standard carriage return? There doesn’t seem to be any way to do this in Word.

In the find box enter ^l (with a lower case L not a number 1, which means the line break you get from Shift-Enter) and in the replace box put ^p which is a paragraph mark (what you get with Enter).

Ian has already solved your problem, but just for future reference: if you click More in the Find/Replace dialog, then click Special, you’ll get a popup list of special items you can use. Paragraph mark and manual line break are among them.

Yeah, I know about the MORE box but I couldn’t find Shift-Enter there.

I wasn’t sure if it was understood that what some call “shift enter” (because that’s the way you enter it) is called “manual line break” (it’s logical meaning) in the replace dialog.
