My boot drive is a 250 Gb SSD,  probably 3 years old.  I recently bought a 500 Gb SSD and would like to make it my boot drive.  I cloned the original drive and quickly noticed that the 1st reserved partition, the primary partition, and the second reserved partition on the new drive are the same sizes as the originals. I cleaned the new drive, cloned the original 1st reserved partition, cloned the original primary partition and then enlarged it, leaving room for a 3rd partition if necessary.  Worked great, until a Windows update, at which time it will no longer boot.  Any suggestions as to how to do this and still take advantage of my new space?

“I cloned the original drive and quickly noticed that the 1st reserved partition, the primary partition, and the second reserved partition on the new drive are the same sizes as the originals.”
      — I suspect that you had an unallocated partition cloning from 250GB to 500GB
      — The unallocated partition can me merged to the primary partition.

It sounds to me like you’d be best to start over & do that.

      Cloning keeps partition sizes.

Windows 10 allows you to expand partitions.
Fire up Disk Management and check if the free space is at the end of the existing, if so, it’s easy.

      Original situation
“I cloned the original drive and quickly noticed that the 1st reserved partition, the primary partition, and the second reserved partition on the new drive are the same sizes as the originals.”

Your situation as of April 29 is “I cleaned the new drive, cloned , cloned the original primary partition and then enlarged it, leaving room for a 3rd partition if necessary. Worked great, until a Windows update, at which time it will no longer boot.”
      — I usually don’t like to assume things and this question may not make sense but I need to ask, is the 1st reserved partition marked as Active?
      — The original primary partition enlarged sounds OK.
      — Then you have “leaving room for a 3rd partition” (which was originally the second reserved partition) “if necessary”.
      — Was that original second reserved partition in there on the 250GB SSD and now you didn’t want it or didn’t need it?
      — Unfortunately you couldn’t boot since a Windows update.

Can you update us on your present condition?

Update!  I decided to start over, using Macrium Reflect to clone the original disk partitions again, wiping the new, larger disk in the process. I then downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard (thanks for that recommendation). This allowed me to move the unallocated space to a position adjacent to the primary partition.  I then expanded the primary partition to use the unallocated space.  The disk boots fine and all available space is being used. I will back it up and then wait for the next Windows update to confirm that all is well.  Thank you for the help!  And yes, the first partition is/was marked as Active. It is labeled “System Reserved” and is only 500 Mb.

Fire up MiniTool Partition Wizard and check the alignment.

Select your SSD and click “Align All Partitions”. MTPW will tell you if anything needs to be changed.

        cheers, Paul

Checked the alignment.  All is well. Thanks again.
