I have noticed some replies to posts appear directly beneath the person’s post you are replying to. In other instances the reply is bounced to the bottom of the latest reply in the replies list.

Wow, that was as difficult to type as it is to read 🙂

Say, “THIS IS THE POST or what I want to respond to”

I want my reply underneath that post, not at the bottom of a page of general replies to the OP.

THIS IS THE POST, or what I want to respond to

This is my reply position I would like.

    X

    X

    X

    Not down here.

    Help?  😀

At the top of each post, there is a “Reply” button. If you click on it in the post you want to reply to, the resulting reply box will nest correctly under the post you are replying to.

Bluetrix, also see the topic which ends with Kristy’s helpful recap for quoting from their comment in your reply. It is a feature available when logged in, but requires using both the REPLY then the QUOTE buttons, in that order. This copies in the entire source with a link to it as a header. If it is lengthy, you can delete sections of the original down to the section relevant for your purpose.

By selecting REPLY first it will nest properly as PKCano described already.

Therein lies my problem (well it used to) I didn’t know you had to scroll up and click QUOTE after a reply box appeared after clicking REPLY.

        Thanks!

Back spacing is a pain for me, I can’t use just the backspace key to erase the last letter of a word, pressing the ctl key and backspace at same time works but it deletes the whole word.

          I need to clarify something.
Every site has it’s own idiosyncrasies. I am accustom to clicking on QUOTE and having my response automatically append (nest) to the post I quoted from, I can edit the quote then if need be. If I wanted to use that quote to respond to a different post, I would just copy the portion I needed and use it later, typically with a attribute and the text contained within quote marks italicized.

Bluetrix, you reflect my similar experience from last year when I first stumbled through using these tools. Later in the year the site did an experiment in strictly chronological display versus nested replies. This showed that the QUOTE button functioned very well on its own as designed, because all replies would be at the bottom of the growing list and full context would be included without scrolling up to yesterday’s post.

When the decision was made returning to nested replies, the coded function of QUOTE did not change. So the two step REPLY then QUOTE became the norm. BBcode wizards can do the magic manually when using the text tab. But syntax is important, and sometimes you’ll see the taupe colored box or italics not close properly.

The next several months showed attempts by many experienced users, which gave rise to that topic linked above and Kristy’s suggestion. And it really is just a suggestion in how to use the tools offered by the interface. If you are comfortable with your own method that clearly communicates, continue with that as well. Having your own personality is fun too.

As you say quirks and idiosyncrasies. The value of the content makes all the oddities worth it. Your willingness to ask, and to be so thoughtful with your replies is why I hope you’ll stay and be helpful with others as well.

In a perfect world everything would be done as one prefers. I am not presumptuous enough to think I can control all of that. Instead of arguing a moot point, I try to find a way that suits me and does so within the parameters provided. My asking questions, “How to” is working for me. If I get a response like yours explaining why it’s the way something is done, I do appreciate that. Likewise, I can understand why people don’t do in depth replies. It takes time to respond and will I appreciate the heuristics of an answer. Any response that points me in the correct direction or tells me something can’t be done here, with or without the “why” has typically offered suggestions on how to accomplish my goal. Granted my questions have been few, still the replies have been helpful and appreciated. Watch, listen and learn reaps rewards also, you just have to invest the time.

I grew up in computer land using DOS commands. I invested the time to learn HTML coding when I started making web pages. With the advent of wysiwyg editors, my puzzling assemblage of code came to an end, as did DOS once GUI became the norm. I’m not “Old Yeller” yet, so don’t take me out into the woods.

BBcode isn’t that horribly difficult, here it is pretty much only used in quoting, block quoting and linking. You really only need to learn a few BBcodes to present text as quoted or as linked text. Imaging requires a bit more, but on this site the ability to upload image files to use in your posts is practically dummy proof.

Using BBcodes are not a requirement to post or reply but can be used to point out what you are replying to with emphasis or clarity.
Block highlighted text is good, but I can see quote marks and read between them to understand what a response is referring to just as well. For me it’s more of, When in Rome, do as the Romans do. I won’t go krazy using it, this isn’t a box of M&M’s 🙂

As you say quirks and idiosyncrasies. The value of the content makes all the oddities worth it. Your willingness to ask, and to be so thoughtful with your replies is why I hope you’ll stay and be helpful with others as well.

The value of content is why I came here, the value of community is why I became a member. It’s easy for me to identify your posts by their content. You are not a typical anonymous poster.(no offense intended to anyone disclaimer) I read your reasons for being such and respect that. It would be our loss if membership were required as it is in some forums and you decided it wasn’t worth that cost.

I’m sure my “how to” questions will soon be over for this site, knowing some answers will allow me to share should the opportunity present itself. Thanks for the invite, I think I’ll stick around, if not for the intelligent banter and breaking Windows news then to at least impart my, “I hate Microsoft’s way of doing things tips and tricks.” as I learn them.

I will say it would be very nice to have a “preview” function to view your post prior to submitting. I know there is a “test” section here but I use another site to test BBcodes. My test is erased as soon as I leave.

FYI The [ left ] at the top didn’t work. It made the code visible in the post. I removed it.

Please remove your test topics when you are through. Thanks.

I think I understand. Because your post is indented my reply will also. Using the entry box doesn’t nest my reply just places it in the order it is received. Using reply will always indent.

      Thx!

If you use “reply” the post will not be full sized, but nest under (indented) the post you are replying to. If you use the entry box without first clicking “reply” the post will be left justified but in chronological order with other left justified posts (not nested to the post you are replying to).
