When I reply or forward email messages that are in HTML format outlook sometimes changes them to Plain Text format. Sometimes it does not.
When it does change it it loses HTML formatting such as links. So it is not sufficient to just change the message back to HTML because the HTML formatting in the original message has been wiped out.
I know there must be a setting somewhere that controls this but I have not been able to find it.
    Please help

Does this occur during the process of composing the reply or after hitting send?

Here’s a hunch: From its earliest days, Outlook allowed you to specify (in address book entries, I think) to “always send in plain text” or “always send in rich text.” This “always” setting overrides the format in which the current message was composed. More recently, you may have seen “let Outlook choose the best sending format” — that is the best choice.

Assuming this is going to an internet address (not an internal address on an Exchange server), double-click the addressee’s address on the reply and check the drop-down for any format override.

I described the problem incorrectly. It turns out that it is replying to Rich text format messages with Plaintect format. It happens when I click on the rply button.

Look here: Tools > Options > Mail Format tab > Internet Format button > “Outlook Rich Text Options” setting.

Note that this should only affect addressees outside of your Exchange server. The reason for this setting is that mail clients other than Outlook can have problems with Rich Text format, so HTML or plain text is preferred.
