Can someone tell me what this message means: “The wizard is unable to create your form or report because you chose too many fields; please try again with fewer fields.”? Is there a limit to the number of field that can be used? If so, what’s the limit?

In Access 97 you can read about the specifications in the help index.

      Specifications
      Microsoft Access
      Microsoft Access Specifications
      Read about table specifications

The max number of fields in A97 is 255.

Paula: From Access 2000 help, keyword was specification – number of controls over the lifetime of a form or report is 754. If you have that many, WOW! 255 is the number of fields in a table or recordset. You may want to check these also.

The database only has around 60 fields, so that’s obviously not the problem. This database has been amended several times already, so we must have something corrupted in it. We’ll probably end up re-creating it. Glad we’re still at the start-up stage.

It may just be that the report becomes too complex for the wizard to handle. The wizard tries to assign control widths according to the size of the underlying fields. The maximum width of a report is 22 inches (55 cm). If the combined widths of the controls exceeds 22 inches (or the page width, if you specify that the wizard must fit everyting onto the page), the wizard must try to reduce the widths. I suppose this may prove too complicated if the number of fields is large (but well below th theoretical maximum of 255).
