• Resetting Security Permissions (97)

The scenario: someone created a database and set permissions on a table so that certain people could not insert any new records, only view the existing ones. That person has since left the company, and now the people that could only view records need to be able to insert them. Is there a way to reset those security permissions?

It will depend on how the data has been secured.

Has the database been secured using the security set up so that you have to log on as a user and do you have the names and password for it?

Have you tried getting at the data from the tables directly? it could be the form design that is locking you out.

I will have to ask them if they are logging on to the database. If that’s the case, they have no idea what the administrator database password would be, that person has left the company.

Also, they are in fact trying to insert records directly into a table, they are not using a form to try to insert the data.

If they are trying to enter records directly into the table, you’re well rid of the former “programmer”. Anyone who allows users direct access to the tables should be shot at dawn … with no blindfold! That is absolutely the surest way to mess up your database in a hurry. Users can’t resist trying things out, with predictable results. However, if they can’t enter data into the tables but they can *see* the tables and view their records, then the database is either secured or hopelessly corrupted.

Charlotte – the database appears to have been secured at some point, and the person that secured it is no longer with the company. We are about to try exporting into a new database, but I just wanted to confirm – is there a way to get around the secure settings and reset them?

If the database was properly secured using the 97 security wizard, then it’s very difficult (maybe impossible depending on how much you want to spend), to crack the security being used. On the other hand if they simply gave a password to the admin account, and created other userid logins, it isn’t that difficult. The import into a new database usually works in that situation. Another strategy is to copy the data records and paste them into Excel, or into an empty table in a new database. That only requires that you have the ability to read the data in the tables.

Try creating a new, empty database and importing everything from the old database into it.
