Hi All – How can I get my File menu to drop down by pressing “Alt F”? I can’t figure out how to restore this setting. Thanks for any assistance,
Erica

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerDecember 18, 2001 at 2:30 am #558736If it has been assigned to something else, you can delete the assignment and it should return to its normal behavior. Open Tools, Customize… and click the Keyboard… button. With your insertion point in the “Press new shortcut key box”, press Alt-F and see if it tells you it is Currently assigned to something. If so, scroll around until you find that command, and click in the Current keys box and remove the assignment. If it is unassigned, then there is some other problem…

AskWoody LoungerDecember 19, 2001 at 3:37 am #558995Can I assume you still have that template attached? If so, in the Customize…, Keyboard… dialog, change the drop down to refer to that template, then assign Alt-F to something (anything), then remove the assignment. Does this clear the phantom setting? There is also the Reset All button, but that would be the last resort if you have a lot of keys assigned. (You can print a list by changing the Print What setting in the Print dialog from document to key assignments.)

Voted “coolest trick of the day” here in my office. An oldie but goodie. Thanks Phil!
I have several shortcut keys assigned over existing ones, and for years have been wondering about the possibility of temporarily “un-assigning” them for regular use.
This does the trick! -

This does the trick! Is that a record for the longest interval between posts in a Lounge thread, Chris?

Not yet (grin!)
I have trouble believing that that little gem has sat there undisturbed for 9 years silently waiting for me to discover it. It’s not that I don’t search The Lounge …Amongst other things, I develop cute little macros for people, typically avoiding any Alt-letter combinations that would conflict with the user’s pre-conceived notions of shortcut keys.
I have now learned that I can appropriate, say, Alt-F,A for the user’s customized File-SaveAs macro while still allowing the user to revert to the default meaning merely by letting got the Alt key.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 6, 2010 at 3:48 pm #1195893If it is not a record now, it can’t become one later! Or do you mean that it is a record but you hope to break it again soon?
yes
We need several categories here, e.g. “Longest interval between original post and reply in a Lounge thread”, “Longest interval between most recent post in a Lounge thread”, “Best supporting reply”, “Best 2nd assistant to first grip’s sandwich-maker“, maybe launch it on YouTube, GO VIRAL…. -
