This might be obvious to most people [ not me ], can you make an image of your system with Acronis, then restore it on a different computer. I believe the hard drive on my computer is going to hard drive heaven. I have an older computer lying around and was wondering if I could just restore to that one, or do I have to buy a new hard drive, install it then restore to that. I have a felling you can’t restore to a different computer, something to do with drivers? Thanks for any help in advance.
    Cheers John.
PS I have an image of my hard drive I made with Aconis 2110.

In theory, you would need the Plus Pack for Acronis 2010 to be able to restore to different hardware. In practice I have experienced two situations:

      1. Restoring without Plus Pack on a new computer – I believe with Acronis True Image 11, the version before TI 2010 – worked fine

      2. Restoring with TI 2010 + Plus Pack on a virtual machine. Complete failure.

So, your restore to the old computer can work, but it is most likely that it will fail, even if you buy the Plus Pack. The only assured solution is buying a new disk.

Any Windows installation is configured and initialized for the hardware, ie motherboard, chipset, CPU, Ethernet and wireless, video, sound, memory subsystems, etc., on the computer which it is installed. Unless your old computer has identical hardware, then replacing your failing hard disk with a new hard drive will be your best value in restoring your image.

The major problem with restoring an image is the disk controller and driver. If these do not map the new disk in the same way, Windows will not be able to find it’s files and will fail to load. You may be able to get around this by booting from CD and repairing / re-installing, but there is no guarantee.

      cheers, Paul
