Hello y’all,

I know that I can select a range and when data is entered (press ENTER key) the selected cell is advanced through the selected range.

Is there a way to restrict data entry to specified columns? For example, my list is in columns A though F. I have set the Edit option “Move selection to RIGHT after entry.”

I want to be able to enter data in row 2 such that when I complete data entry in F2 and press enter, instead of selecting G2, the next selected cell is A3.

Is that possible?

Why not set the Enter key to move down? You can still use the Tab key to move right.
The Tab key will move through the selected range row by row.
The Enter key will move through the selection column by column.

If you really want to restrict data entry, you can protect the worksheet.
First, select the cells the user should be able to edit.
Select Format | Cells…
Activate the Protection tab.
Clear the Locked check box (this is on for all cells by default).
Click OK.
Select Tools | Protection | Protect Sheet…
Set the options to allow selection of unlocked cells, but not selection of locked cells.
Click OK.

This result can be achieved without any form of restriction at all.

If you start in A2 and enter data, then tab across the columns entering data. When you get to F2, then Enter (not tab). This will return the activecell to cell A3 where you enter data and tab across till F3 and then Enter again to get to A4.

PS: You may also consider the DATA | FORM comand which allows you to enter data into a list without the need to tab or enter.

Thanks so much, my client like the “Protection” approach, and I do appreciate your help.

I learned something new with the TAB and ENTER key combinations! Why does it work that way?

The ENTER key can be modified to move UP, DOWN, LEFT or RIGHT by changing the direction setting in the Options of Excel. (As you know). The TAB key is not programmable, but just functions by moving right in Excel. I guess it mimicks Word and Powerpoint in that those programs jump towards the right with tab settings.
