• Right Click Failure (XP Pro SP1)

Using Win XP Pro I tried to use the “run as” command on the command prompt
menu entry and the right click did not work. The right click directly on
the file cmd.exe worked so we got the ability to perform our task.

Has anyone seen where the right click quickly displays the menu but won’t
actually perform any of the tasks and then disappears but the right click
function does work when we are not using the Start Menu or Start, All
    Programs menu?

    Thanks,
    Jester

      Jester-

I’m a little bit confused as to exactly what you want to do. Do you want to add a “run as” command to your right click context menu? Add the command prompt to your right click context menu? Fix your right click context menu’s “run as” command?

      Kelly’s Tweaks:

Restore the Run Command Line 57 Right Side
Change Associateions from the Run Command Line 30 Right Side
Restore “Run As” 111 Left Side
Restore Context Menu 284 Left Side

See A to Z >”C”>Context Menu for registry keys to customize the context menu. Also BAxBEx Open Expert may help you.

Let’s try again… the right click context menu has everything I need but nothing in that menu works when we right click on the Start All Programs menu. I noticed this when I tried to use the “run as” command on the “command prompt” entry in that menu. The “run as” appears in the context menu but it does not work when it is “SHIFT RIGHT CLICKED”. The other example of this behavior was when the client tried to right click on a menu entry to drag a short cut to the desktop. Both right click operations failed. The menu appears but does not work… it just disappears.

However, browsing to the actual “CMD.EXE” file and shift right clicking on the executable itself gets the desired result. Same for right clicking on an executable that the client wanted to drag to the desktop to make a shortcut.

The menu contents are fine and everything we expect to see is present. There is no issue with attempting to ADD anything to the menu. Using the Start, All Programs, etc. route to an application and then shift right clicking on the menu entry does not work and neither does right clicking on the menu when attempting to drag a shortcut to the desktop.

Don’t know when it started but Monday I will run SFC and will look to see how many restore points are available. Thanks for jogging my memory.

I do believe I found the cause. I have duplicated this behavior by unchecking “enable drag and drop” and “run command” on the advanced properties menu for the start menu.

Right click task bar, properties, click start menu, customize, advanced, the scroll to the two options.

I will know for sure on Monday morning.

I wouldn’t have thought to go there for this–sometimes those items on the advanced tab can impact more things than you might think from their names and you just have to try them to see what happens. I bet that’s it.

Clicking “enable drag and drop” resolved both our issues… inability to “run as” on the command prompt menu entry and the inability to create shortcuts by dragging to the desktop from off the menu.
