My client just had office 2002 installed on her new dell computer (I didn’t do the installation, it was probably done at the factory… but someone else moved her documents from her old computer to this new one). Anytime she opens a Word document she gets this error: runtime error ’53: file not found: QStartup.dll (the dialog box title window reads: microsoft visual basic). She clicks end and it goes away. We re-installed office using the repair and it hasn’t helped. Thanks for any help or insight. P.S. She was using Office 2000.

Some of add-ins can create the problem. Remove any files from C:Documents and SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftWordSTARTUP folder. If the problem remains, rename all normal.dot files and let Word create a new one.

As far as I can see from Google, QStartup.dll seems to belong to some 3rd party add-in for quotations.

If you have installed such an add-in, try to deinstall it.

Oh Klaus, oh Klaus, Oh Klaus you are a miracle worker. I did a websearch for that .dll but I guess I missed it. As soon as I saw your e-mail, it was a V-8 moment.. I happened to be at my clients when I saw your answer and I said, quick grab the quotations disk, we in-stalled and now no more ugly run-error in either Word or PowerPoint. We think you are awesome! –
