Save as broken

First of all, I have an old version of Word (2000), running happily under Windows XP.

I have a file that when I double-click it and open it in Word, if I select File->Save As, it will ONLY allow it to be saved as a template (a .dot file) — the “Save as type” box is greyed out. I thought this was happening with all of my files, but it is only files that I created from a single file. I’m not sure what’s causing this, but maybe people here can help. The regular “Save” works great; it’s just “Save as…” that is broken.

(In the Options, the “Save Word files as” is set to *.doc, so it’s not that…

In the old days, the inability to save as anything other than a .dot file often indicated the presence of a macro virus.

I don’t have time to do a lot of research on this issue at the moment, but a quick Google search turned up a page from Boston College that looks like it might be helpful. Here’s the link. Take it with a grain of salt; I haven’t read the entire page, so I can’t vouch for the accuracy of the instructions. But at first glance, it appears to be worthwhile.

I will look up the links to let you know. It only happens when I edit a certain document or copies thereof, so I suspect that something is amiss in the document.
