Save as Web Page, Complete (IE 6, SP2)

I’m working with a Road Rep who has been able (for months) to save an HTML as “Web Page, complete”.

We both use WinXP and are both up-to-date with all Critical Updates.

Within the last couple of days, Mel has only two choices — HTML and Text File. I know that there is a way to DISABLE saving complete web pages but we checked his registry and that’s not the problem.

I am attaching an image showing my “Save Web Page” dialogue box on the left and Mel’s on the right.

Any insight?

That dialog (despite the XP curved corners) looks like a very old version of IE. But he has IE6? Could you refresh the install? If that’s not the problem, are there any add-ins or other software that intercept browser saves? (For example, our document management system does that, although the dialogs don’t actually change.)

Thanks for your reply. Mel’s IE is 6.0, xpsp2, same as all of the other Road Reps.

I was told that the “Save As” dialogue box is “run” by a .dll that also runs the Save As dialogue boxes for Word, Excel, etc. That’s why they all look the same.

The theory is that he might have installed new software that had an old .dll that overwrote his original .dll. He confirms that he has NOT loaded any software other than what we send him on CD (patches to Progress programs).

Mel has refreshed Internet Explorer but no success on saving a web page.

His ctl3d32.dll and ctl3dv2.dll. were created 01-01-80. Mine were created on 08-29-02. Both operating systems are XP Professional.

The boss says, “It will very likely break something IF he is able to replace them. They are core components of the operating system and will be ‘in use’ all the time. Besides, we don’t know if that will solve the problem because we don’t know that either of those files is the one in use at the time. Probably the only way we can fix it is to have him send the machine back here, we reimage and send it back.”

There is a System File Checker utility (SFC) that can refresh “wrong” files in the Windows install. If you check the Windows XP forum for posts on SFC, you can see the exact command line you need, where to run it, and what CD you’ll need to have on hand. In a corporate setting, where the user probably doesn’t have the Windows CD, re-imaging may well be more efficient.
