Save attached template in Startup folder (Word XP

I want to distribute my template to others in as an “idiot-proof” way as possible. I thought of creating a document explaining what the template does and including a button to “install” my attached template into the readers Word Startup folder. Buttons, etc. no problem!, but I can’t see how, if at all possible, to save my attached template to anywhere. In all my searches people seem to just copy templates from one place to another, which I prefer not to do.

How else would you like to get your template into the user’s Startup folder?

Yes, attached template means another file not the one I’ve attached it to. Just throw this thread away and I’ll take my embarrassment elswhere.

I use a small template called SetUp.dot which is packaged in a ZIP file with an application.

SetUp locates the user’s startup folder, correctly identifies which templates in that folder are outdated, disables htem, and rolls in the updated versions (of a set of one or more templates), then quits Word. An earlier version was fancy, with a GUI form to allow the user to select any valid folder, and throwing the TXT logfile on the screen with the guts of the process for all to see. (disabled as “CG:2048” if you take a look).

You can see SetUp in action from any of the ZIP files on my download page at http://www.chrisgreaves.com. The code is not locked. If you want to single-step through the code,. open the template (File, Open) but hold down the Shift key while you click on the dialogue box’s “Open” to inhibit auto-execution.

I think that I may just go down the “open this document, read what it does and click this button” route because most of the academics I deal with here do everything through Word, including opening .exe files that I’ve told them to open using “My Computer” ! I then get the phone calls – “Word’s asking me how I want to convert your program?” – Scream!
