I’ve a word document created in Word 2000. I edited it in Word 2007, but saved it as Word 97-2003 format. However, it will not open in any version of word prior to 2007, but opens fine in Word 2007.

When attempting to open in previous versions, most of the text is garbled, but I do note the letters .xml appear near the top (but not in the first line).

Are there known issues like this. I’ve seen compatibility problems before, but mostly with new functions introduced in word 2007 causing problems when those documents are opened in previous versions, but there are no such issues in this document, which is just text and basic formatting.

    Is this a known issue?

    Can I fix it?

This sounds like the file is really saved in 2007 format but has a file extension of .doc.

Try opening the file in Word 2007 and then doing another SaveAs and choose the older format again.

You can use BBCodes to format your content.
