    Somebody showed me this trick.
When I follow the instructions, involving opening 4 files arranged ‘just so’, the results are unsatisfactory in these two respects:
    1. The zoom settings for individual worksheets are not respected
    2. The ‘freeze panes’ instructions on each worksheet are lost
When I close the files without saving and open each of them ‘in the ordinary way’ (from windows explorer, in my case), they remain well-behaved.
Is it me, or excel, which is getting it wrong?
Failed to find anything in the MS KB

    Thanks.

The workspace concept was useful in Excel 4 or so, when a workbook only consisted of one worksheet. It’s still available for compatibility purposes, but it hasn’t really been updated, so it’s pretty useless. You can create many worksheets within one workbook, and you can open a bunch of workbooks at once from Windows Explorer or from within Excel, so you don’t really need a workspace any more.

Thanks, Hans, I’d come to the view that as it isn’t reliable, it’s not worth the bother.
The only advantage would have been to handle the fact that the files I want to work with live, for good reasons, in different folders.
But thnaks, as usual, for your time.
