1. Is it possible to save a selected area in a spreadsheet as a bmp or jpg file from Excel.

2. Can I copy a selected area in a spreadsheet to a mail message without losing formats.

I am using Office 2000, win98 and MS Outlook

Excel does not have the facility to save graphic formats, but you can take a bitmap snapshot of a given area, start MSPaint or Photo Editor (or any other bitmap editing tool) and paste the image into that and save as the required format. To do this, select the area you wish to save, and holding down the Shift key, goto Edit, Copy Picture, and when prompted set the format to Bitmap. Then paste into your paint program and save as jpg or bmp etc.

Question no 2 depends on what settings you have in place. Experiment by cutting and pasting, but most basic formatting should be ok.

you may want to looks at a shareware program called ‘SnagIt’. It works very well for capturing a section of a window an creating an image.

I think there may be some other freeware screenprint utilties that allow you to crop a captured screen image (PrintKey may be one of them)

Have you tried using the CAMERA under Tools|Customize, Commands|Tools|Camera?

Well, the camera doesn’t actually make either a bmp or jpg, but I thought the original poster just wanted to capture a snapshot of a formatted section of a sheet. If you drag over the section you want and then click the camera icon (if you’ve placed it on a toolbar), click the mouse elsewhere in the sheet and the image is inserted. While it’s selected you can copy it, move to Word, say, and paste the snapshot. Cute.

I didn’t know about the camera, but I did use the following technique in the past:

1) Select the region you want, Ctrl-C to copy.
2) Open Word, choose Edit (menu), Paste Special…, then choose “Picture (Enhanced Metafile)” from the “As:” list and click OK.

This is a great technique for “icing” portions of Excel workbook for a summary report. It works on graphs, too.

After trying the camera, it looks like the same functionality in Excel, but it requires the camera button because the Paste Special choices for Excel are more Excel-specific and less generic.

Hi:
I might as well throw in another little trick here. Here is a way that can capture a portion of the spreadsheet without even having to load the CAMERA function:
Select the portion of the spreadsheet you want and with the
your shift key depressed, go to Edit>Copy picture Accept
the defaults and click Ok and then Paste anywhere in EXCEL or WORD or where ever.

Lets not forget the the alt-Print Screen. Copies the active window into the clipboard. Paste into photo editor and crop. Fast, simple, and you already have all the parts. Works for any application
