First time I’ve seen a New England company using a Samoan domain name. Of course, I know it’s permissible…

AskWoody LoungerNovember 12, 2006 at 5:06 am #1038311Warning.
When I tried downloading from this site my anti-spyware gave me this alert.
Updated: December 13, 2005 04:41:31 PM PST
Type: Adware
Name: Zango Search Assistant
Version: 6.8.196.0/6.9.95.0
Publisher: 180solutions inc
Risk Impact: Low
File Names: InstallerShell.exe JadeShadowInstall.exe JadeShadowSetup.exe ZangoInstaller.exe ZangoJadeShadow.exe ZangoTVTimes.exe zanu.exe
Systems Affected: Windows 2000, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003, Windows XPBehaviorAdware.ZangoSearch is an adware program that monitors the contents of Internet browser windows. It opens the Web pages of partner sites when certain keywords are detected in Internet search or shopping browser windows. This program also installs files related to Adware.180Solutions.
SymptomsYour Symantec product detects the files as Adware.ZangoSearch.Caveat Emptor. (I’m not sure what the Latin is for ‘Person Downloading Something Free Beware’)

AskWoody LoungerNovember 12, 2006 at 5:34 am #1038312… It certainly appears to carry unwanted “extra baggage”. I’ll append this info to the original post. However, I note this from a usenet posting:
“It seems that it is the Video Converter, not the Video Decompiler, that contains the Zango component (it isn’t stealth, it’s stated right up front in the first install screen). However, even in this case, Zango can be uninstalled without apparently impacting the functionality of the program. Their EULA does not prohibit doing this.
Zango does not uninstall cleanly, though (is anyone surprised?). Spybotting afterwards removes what its uninstall didn’t.
On the other hand, though, the Video Decompiler also states right up front that it is installing a different Ad/Spyware, WhenU Save. The initial screen says that you cannot remove this adware without removing the decompiler, but Software Club’s EULA, which states that “This Agreement constitutes the entire understanding of the parties…” does NOT prohibit this removal as part of the license.
WhenU Save won’t uninstall through the Add/remove Programs GUI, and although Spybot doesn’t detect it, Spyhunter does and points to the relevant registry entries and files.
However, by removing the WUS manually, the decompiler runtime errors out.
(Not to be argumentative, but how did you miss the initial disclaimer about WUS?) ”
> ‘Person Downloading Something Free Beware’
So true. But ad/spyware is certainly not limited to “free”. Many sites/ vendors expect you to also pay for the privilege!
