Hi,
I have a HP PC running windows 7. I run scans on MSE, CCleaner, Spybot, Malaware Bytes and use the Eset online scanner. Do you think it is enough to keep the PC clean from viruses, malware, and spyware? Also was thinking of switching from MSE to AVG free. Would this be a good change?
Thanks for any input.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 5, 2013 at 10:03 am #1373025I also use a multi-layered approach. I use AVG AV 2013 Pro (Used MSE and AVG 2013 free with good results. switched to AVG Pro to allow updating sigs more often). I also run MalwareBytes Anti-malware Pro and Spybot Search and Destroy both running in real time (MalwareBytes only runs in real time with the Pro edition). I also have a S/W firewall (Windows firewall) and a H/W firewall (router). The biggest offender is the person in front of the keyboard. If you can control that person that is a large part of the battle.
I have never had a successful attack against me. I do feel safe.
CCleaner is more a cleanup maintenance app rather than an AV/AM security app.

You forgot to mention the most important part, the nut behind the keyboard!
If you keep this nut tight you’re approach should be about 99.999% effective. -

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 14, 2013 at 12:56 pm #1374816schonman, all the replies above are correct. You have some good applications in place, now just a few more details…mainly with your habits….
-use regular account for most stuff, only use admin rights when you need it
-always be careful what files you execute, scan them _before_ running them with your installed tools
-maybe upload them to https://www.virustotal.com/ and http://virusscan.jotti.org/en-gb
-run the safest browser you can( and perhaps in sandboxie! http://www.sandboxie.com/)
-avoid toolbars, “smiley” programs, torrent sites, etc.
make it easy to recover from a problem:
-make sure system restore is running
-backup your important files/folders, etc.
-consider a disk imaging applicationHowever, you are already doing more than most people!
Cheers!

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 18, 2013 at 11:13 am #1375478I agree with what has been stated, the simple fact that you’re aware and running defensive applications puts you ahead of the curve from the general populace.
Folks tend to have their prefs. for which AV’s and AM’s apps. they recommend, but as long as you have something, it’s better than having nothing.
Personally I run Avast, Spybot S&D, and use the windows defender and my router’s firewalls. I run those scans weekly and then secondary scans if I notice and issues or questionable behavior, with Mbytes etc….The best offense is a great defense.
