I was changing the screen res. on an older P3 with XP Pro to make the icons smaller and so on. I switched to the next larger in the menu, and it acted on that command. The screen went blank and said not supported 87 Hz. This is a fairly new monitor, less that 6 months old. Imagine my surprise. I thought it might revert or at least ask me to save changes. No such luck. I put up two other monitors, including an old Sony CRT that worked on this desktop before. Same thing. Tried starting in safe mode. No help. We do get the XP start up splash screen, so I know it works. Hmmmm. Tried going into BIOS and resetting defaults, still says 87Hz, not supported.? Any ideas.. Thanks in advance. tr

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerMay 6, 2010 at 1:46 pm #1222362Safe mode is supposed to load standard VGA graphics drivers and I would think, a standard refresh rate to go with it but for some reason, NOT.
I would try a LINUX live CD, either a utility disc or a full OS, if nothing else, to establish that the video card will actually come out of the non-standard refresh rate, or if its stuck there. I don’t know of any LINUX utilities that will change the refresh rate for the regular boot mode but there must be something.
Other idea is to try booting into command line if possible and running system restore from there. That will fix it if its fixable and you can boot into command line. You can also run the system restore utility from a UBCD4Win disc if you get a GUI.

AskWoody LoungerMay 6, 2010 at 3:10 pm #1222398Does the following procedure (in EXACTLY that order) work?
0) turn off monitor and computer
1) pull the power plug off of the computer
2) if the computer has a power switch on the rear side switch it from 1 to 0
3) press (and hold for a few seconds) the on-switch on the front
4) repeat step 3)
5) plug in the power cord
6) switch rear switch from 0 to 1 (if applicable)
7) turn on the monitor
8) reset the monitor to its factory defaults via on-screen-display
9) turn on the computer
10) while booting, press the F8-key to enter the boot menu
11) select safe mode -
