Download section says the following: “Choose your platform: Windows 2000/XP, MacOS X, OS/2, Debian Repository w/Instructions, Source and RPMS.” Evidently, it is apparently not compatible with Vista.

Actually, I dual-boot my system (Vista & XP), but there isn’t an ounce of regret anywhere for having gone to Vista.

Addendum: I did some further reading on the Scribus website since I wanted to download and try this program on XP. And, in doing so, I found this bit of information which I thought others might appreciate as well:

Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008 all will run Scribus.

BTW, Scribus requires that you install another item called, GhostScript, which the author provides a link for as well. I don’t know what this is all about, especially if it is a specialized file which isn’t included in Windows. Would anyone like to hazard a guess about this file?

GhostScript is an interpreter for PostScript, a page description language developed by Adobe that is used in many printers and that is also used as an intermediate step in creating PDF files; it also supports converting PostScript to PDF and vice versa. GhostScript is used by several applications that use/create PostScript and/or PDF. See the Ghostscript Website.

Is this “GhostScript” file something which is normally found with most Windows installations? OR, perhaps it is typically included in generally installed applications, e.g., Office, Acrobat Reader, et al? OR, is this file something which in most cases is not found?

The reason for my question should be obvious . . . I do not want to install something which I already have and which is evidently working fine.

No, GhostScript is not part of Windows and neither does it come with the software that the average Windows user installs such as Office, Adobe Reader etc. So a large majority of Windows PCs will not have GhostScript installed. Whether *you* already have it, I obviously don’t know – you can check in the Add or Remove Software control panel.

The version of Ghostscript I have does not show in Install/Remove. I have been using versions of it for several years without issues. http://www.ghostscript.com/%5B/url%5D

If you want a specific example of Hans’ general statement, above, Ghostscript is required to run CutePDF a program which allows you to ‘print’ to a PDF file from Word or other Office products (for example!).

Ghostscript supports a large range of output devices and file formats, not just ps/PDF; although it’s usually PDF that people associate it with. See Ghostscript Devices.

And if you want to convert your Publisher documents to Scribus the scribus wiki has an answer.

Everything I have read indicates that the creators of Scribus have no plans to enable import of .pub files
